I wouldn't, you'll have the worst exhaust leak in history.

The piece that screws into the block is metal, then it has a hex nut, then it has a plastic piece. Most people break off the plastic piece. You can then get the sending unit socket from an auto parts store and unscrew what's left of it. When removing/re-installing, people like to slip that socket down over the sending unit to protect the plastic part from getting snapped.

Do a search, we even had a poll about who's all broken their sensor.

Hate to bump an old thread but FWIW, the oil pressure sensor needs a 1-1/16" deep well socket. Took my friend and myself 4 hrs to do an intake "swap" (just removed his and put it back, cuz he broke the sensor and figured why not just remove it instead of fishing for it). Wasn't too bad just be patient. Just thought I'd toss that in...

Yea, I had a Hell of a time finding that socket. Had my intake in and out 3 times before I finally broke the sending unit.

So, here I am 2 months later.. finally finished the install and broke the sending unit. Oil pressure shot all the way up. Is this a normal problem that occurs when the sending unit breaks? does this mean I can't drive it? or will I have to wait to get the sending unit and fix it.

I'm not too surprised...just sort of pissed. Glad it ran. only for about 10 seconds before I shut it off.

Yea, it's normal for the oil pressure gauge to either not register or register full up. You could probably drive it, but I wouldn't because if for some reason you do actually lose oil pressure, your not going to know it till it's too late.

I have one coming in tomorrow at 9 a.m. The problem is, it's a 25 minute drive away. I also need to get one of those oil pressure sensor sockets. I don't want to risk driving my car. The guys at this particular dealership are really smart. They told me to be careful because in some cases, the oil will actually leak from the sending unit, depending on how bad it may have been damaged. I think If I drive it at all, I'll let it idle for a few minutes, just so when I apply load to it, it will be minimal. reducing the risk of an oil blowout.

We should make it part of a sticky...

When doing an LS6 Swap, Make sure the booster hose is OVER the oil pressure sending sensor before yanking on anything. Also, I noticed, after sliding the intake out about an inch...I can reach behind and disconnect everything needed to be disconnected - rather than pulling it out enough to see what your doing (thus breaking the pressure sensor.)

I am doing mine in the next few weeks. Question, can I take the part number for the coolent lines needed to Auto zone, or do I have to go to the dealership?
