Default Need help with thermostat

I was wondering if any of u ever took out ur thermostat?
Cause my car always overheats, since I put the F-1 blower, swapped to a TH400, and swapped the K-member and upp/low arms.

I replaced my old Radiator with a SLP rad. a few months ago.

But, I was wondering if u took out the thermo, would it hurt anything????

There are some people that run older SBC and BBC cars without a thermostat. I don't know how the car will want to act though. There may be no difference. I would just get a 160° and call it a day.

It would take for freaking ever to get up to temp, especially if you're driving it anywhere. The one in my S-10 blazer stuck open and it would take 30 minutes of driving to hit 160*, it did have a conventional fan though.....

I do have a 160 stat. and it still does it. I think it's cause I have and IRON block, and now that we swapped the tranny, it is getting hotter. cause after driving some. the shifter gets hella hot to where it's hard to keep ur hand on it.

So, is it ok to run w/o a stat? if I take it out, will it only just take alot of time to heat up??? or will it ruin anything else?

have you lowered your fan temps? a lower temp thermostat does nothing if you havent done that.. i wouldnt run without a thermostat if your engine stays at 160 170f thats plenty cool enough and if your thermostat isnt stuck closed and you set the fans to come on at a lower temp it should stay around 170- about 180 max depening on where you set the fans to come on , i set mine to come on at 162 and 163 for the other fan. my temp always stays lower then it did before even though ive heard my year temp gauge is innacurate. i also got an electric water pump so that helps alil with the flow.

Don't pull the stat. As stated above lower the fan "on" temps &/or add a manual fan switch. Could also, drill two small holes 180 degrees (angular) apart on the face of the t stat to allow a bit of coolant to flow through (also, air to escape) the stat all of the time. Also, connect the vents on the rear of the heads to allow a bit more coolant flow & give any air pocket a place to go. Can add a product to the coolant that helps the coolant remove heat better also as part of the work.

i have set my fans to come on at 165, and I have a SLP fanswittch. but it still goes over 210 (half way mark) and almost tothe 3/4'r point.

even if i have the fan on all the time, it still does it.

Just try it guys, probably not going to hurt anything. I hope the thermostat is not part of the gasket like on some SBC units though.

I took the thermostat out of a friends car and it ran great....stayed at 180-190 degrees on a 100 degree day. stock fan settings and all.... I took mine out also and it runs real nice and cool. winters arent bad here, but i will most likely put it back in then anyways.
