CAI kit - hydrolock?
CAI kit - hydrolock? Well i was considering on doin the SLP CAI kit but now i hear of hydrolocking the engine with CAI's. If i do the CAI what will i have to watch for, so i won't hydrolock my engine? Has this happened to anyone? Thanks.

Seriously, most people are panicked over the idea of potentially hydrolocking the motor with FRA, FTRA or the SLP Cold Air kit and it can happen if the driver is careless with deep water, it's just common sense of course. A simple rainy day will not hurt you.

Re: CAI kit - hydrolock? Never had a problem with my Supersucker and I've driven through some torrential rains. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> Just don't go driving through deep water.

My hood is de-baffeled and sealed to the air box. When it rains, the filter gets wet. Water does go into the motor. I've had it like this for nearly 3 years. Does it hurt anything-NOPE!

Re: CAI kit - hydrolock? I've had FTRA on my car for over a year and a half. I've never even used the blockoff plate they give you. As said above, unless you are driving through DEEP water, there is nothing to worry about. Just use your noggin! Not like this though---> <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" /> .
Re: CAI kit - hydrolock? I have Preddy's FTRA on my '02 SS. Fitment and quality real good. I think it's a real good piece, but wish it were a tad less heavy... Probably could've shaved 2 or 3 lbs. off the piece if they used a little thinner stock. WJ. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Re: CAI kit - hydrolock? They all have their pros and cons. I bought the Supersucker because I think it's the best. However the supersucker is the most expensive and you could hit a curb with it. FTRA is another good one but it is heavy, some people have a problem with the install, lining up the bolts, and of all three CAI's it tends to make your car run hotter due to it lays over the radiator all the way to the airdam. SLP's is the cheapest and probably the worst of the 3 for performance. It doesn't extend very far down and it doesn't flow as much air as the Supersucker or FTRA.
I chose the supersucker because it actually scoops in air and doesn't lay in front of the radiator. It angles away towards the front bumper. Also it probably flows the most air. I'm very careful with how I drive and have never hit anything with it. They also have a drag race version of the lower scoop that's huge.

Re: CAI kit - hydrolock? Don't worry about hydrolocking unless your driving through the Atlantic. I have FTRA and picked up 2 tenths. Just my opinion <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />
Re: CAI kit - hydrolock? I've had my FTRA for about 1.5 yrs and haven't had any problems. I live in Florida and it rains like hell some times and I've driven the car "responsibly" and never had a problem.

Anyone notice their engine running hotter then it normally does or can you even notice cuz of the idiot temp gauge? i live in texas and in the summer it gets to 100 pretty easily here. I ask a lot of questions cuz i don't wanna buy something and mess my car up. Thanks for the help on this.

Re: CAI kit - hydrolock? Living in Florida, I can relate to the heat. The car, monitored with autotap, did run about 10 degrees warmer with the FTRA installed. I put in a 180 thermostat and a SLP manual fan switch and that was taken care of.

Re: CAI kit - hydrolock? I think I'll be getting the FTRA, however, living in houston, flooding can happen in the blink of an eye. I believe I'll be leaving the blockoff plate in for daily driving, and remove it for cruises, friday n saturday nights, and the track. From what I hear its real easy to put in. Peace of mind is a nice thing since I know 2 people personally who've hydro-locked their motors with the FTRA. <img border="0" alt="[cry]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cry.gif" />

I went with the FTRA.I bought it used for $110 shipped.I think it is a quality piece and would reccomend it to anyone.As far as hydro locking,you'd probably have to drive through 1' deep water.Fitment was OK and installation was a breeze.As far as the heat issue,go with a cooler t stat and adjustable fan setup.
