Default Simple PCV question...

I'm having an oil consumption problem, and i'm tryin to track it down. When i take my throttle body off, should I see oil in my intake if it's a PCV problem??? Because my intake is perfectly dry and clean. So i'm kinda worried now. Any advice is appreciated.

If you have an oil consumption problem and your intake is dry and you have no external leaks then you know what that leaves..... internal leakage by the rings.

Yeah <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" /> That's a big D'OH on a engine with only 45k miles that's never seen a drag strip. Suppose that means it's time to go engine shopping. Not to mention sell a kidney and my left leg.

Please don't take this wrong but just so that I'm clear, you take off the air lid and bellows so that you can see the butterfly on the TB, you open it with the left hand turning the linkage while taking your right index finger and rubbing against the back of the butterfly and there is absolutly no oil or goo, right? It's totally dry? To start with that's not possible with a stock functional LS1 PCV system. How much oil are we talking about that is disapearing? Define oil consumption? Also, are you seeing any smoke come out the back of the car when you go to WOT?

If you are pre-2001 (I think) there's a known
oil consumption "non-problem" (as GM likes to
spin it) with the #1 cylinder being overbored
and taking up oil. Then there's the other "non-
problem" of the rings liking to flutter and let
oil by, reputed to be mostly under high RPM,
light load (although why load should matter to
the oil control ring I couldn't begin to explain).
I'd say if you have a #1 plug that's always way
more fouled than the rest, you might have a
fight worth fighting, to get a new block or
something. The other, general oil consumption
deal, GM probably will put up more resistance on.
I'm sure there're folks around here who know way
more about this and can tell you more authoritatively
about what's what.

No oil on the back of the butterfly, hardly a trace of oil in the intake. I didn't believe it either!! My consumption = about 1.5-2 quarts per 3k miles, and I only see see smoke under load and WOT. Might have to pull that number 1 plug see what it looks like. I was thinking rings at first, but I wanted to check PCV just to be absolutely positive. BTW, it is a '98 Z28, so that could be the culprit.

That's too much oil comsumption in 3k miles. You need to get out the compression tester and do BOTH the dry AND wet tests in that order. If #1 is SUBSTANTIALLY lower than the other 7 you in for a teardown. You might want to do a LEAKDOWN too while your at it. That would help you narrow down the problem. That much oil doesn't just evaporate.
