Default Exhaust Set Up Question

Ok I love the sound of flowmasters, but i know its not a super high flow muffler. Im gonna have LTs/ORY. Would running a flowmaster catback and an electronic cutout be a good idea to have the best of both worlds? I can have the sound i want for putting around town but if i need the power i can open it up in no time. Any opinions??

yes, thats what i have, i can have a stupid silent car anytime i want, or i can have a retarded loud car any time i want. the headers make all the difference though...and the flowmaster is pretty quiet and airy with headers, definitely wimpy compared to an open cutout...

Yeah i forgot to put that i will be running LTs/ORY lol. Whats your definition of pretty quiet? I want it to be balsy sounding all the time but wont get the power with a flo obviously. I figured a full setup back like this with the flo catback would be pretty sick sounding all the time then scream with the cut open.

I think that it is a good idea. Especially if you are going to have an electric cutout. You have power at your finger tip.

All the flowmaster will do is help you lose about 2-5 rwhp at the most in some cases. I think you will be alright. Plus you don't have cats.

5hp max difference in the flowmaster and having the cutout open? Thats not even worth the cost of it and having it installed. Its gonna be a bolt on car through summer then fall getting a cam. Prob not much more than that, should be quick enough at that point. Should i go ahead and do the cutout when the rest of the exhaust is done? I just got this car recently and havent done any exhaust work yet, its just got induction/appearance/stereo **** so far. So im planning exhaust now.

Now don't quote me on it, but it will be around that loss, maybe not any negative effect at all. But with the cut-out open you will see more power. You can improve any setup (mainly stock) with a cutout. It will work a wonder. Now if you had a GMMG or high dollar stainless exhaust or something I would think twice before botching it with a crappy cutout.

Im digging a 3" flowmaster catback with corsa tips, LTs, ORY. How bad does the flowmaster catback drone vs say magnaflow, hooker, or corsa??

You will get mixed responses asking that question. Everyone has their own tolerances and opinions on that subject alone. Corsa sounds good. I personally like the Magnaflow. Not a fan of the Hooker catback, probably because I have not heard too many of them.

My friend has a STOCK ws6, factory manifolds and cats and everything, and his flowmaster is pretty raspy and tinny sounding. I can imagine that deleting cats and adding LTs will only magnify this.

Aluminum blocks also tend to resonate more than an iron block. That is where the rasp originally starts from.

But dont get me wrong. Everything will tend to have rasp even if it is iron.

flowmaster sounding tinny? hmmm. ive got a friend with a 98 a4 with only a flow and its got a pretty deep tone. i think it sounds good if it was just louder obviously. waaay better than stock. not real raspy or high sounding under wot. LTs/ORY would definately change the sound but i dont see how it could sound bad.

You get what you pay for in most cases. So it is all a matter of personal preference.

My flow is 5years old....with my LT's it is the deepest sounding setup I have heard, other then T.Duals ...I have a QTEC and when that is open it is VERY loud. I don't care about 2-5 hp or whatever loss from the flow..not running cats probably mekes up for it.....I am not racing on the street and always have the cutout anyways.

LOL i bet, im pretty sure i will end up with a flow catback and an electronic cutout. I dont really do much racing anyway i just like to have the power if i want it. I would prob open the cut out a couple times a month lol

For awhile I have been thinking of changing mufflers because of all the " BAD PRESS " about Flowmaster...but I am older and like the sound they make..had them for 27 years....sounds fine to me..to me, the sound of a bullet is too much, and hooker, borla[closed],edelbrock and all the others are 'too quiet'..I don't really care about a couple of horse loss...I plan on making it up another way soon.
