Default FIPK or LID?

Which is better, a K&N FIPK and Volant cold air intake or a lid? They are both very different. Mine had the volant when i bought it and was wondering if it was as good as a lid or even better. Why have the open air cleaner vs. the lid, would that make it better?

This is what the volant intake looks like.

I would say if you already have the volant, leave it.

If you really hate it and/or have some extra cash, swap it out for a lid and ftra.

I got the FIPK and kind of regret it.

Even though I have only had the FRA and a lid, my opinion would be to leave the Volant on there. It would seem to me that it would pick up more cool air than the FRA. Since the holes are right above the radiator and condensor on the FRA in traffic you would be sucking up hot air radiating off those parts. With that Volant, it would seem you have more access to cool air, or at least air further away from hot engine parts. The FIPK just looks like it would suck hot air collecting at the top of the engine compartment, hanging there under the hood.

IMHO, leave the Volant. If you don' t like it, I might be interested in buying it ;D

I'd most definitely stay with the setup you have. Its perfect for the Ram Air hood, since its sealed around the air filter and draws air directly through the inlets.

A lid pulls air more from the bottom of the car, and the FIPK mostly just pulls air from the engine bay.

If you haven't already done so, drill out the rivets in your Ram Air hood, so you get the true "Ram Air" effect

That Volant is only good on a WS6.

The lid w/flat filter (K&N) is the best.

I say leave it and spend your $$$ on something else. You aren't going to notice any difference in horsepower by going to a lid unless you have a cam, heads, etc. and are putting down 500whp.

Well...I didn't.

I saw his username was "LPWS", and automatically assumed his car was a T/A WS6.

My bad

dont spend extra money, stay with what you have. The differences between the two are not much. They both have plusses and minuses depending on temp, whether you are driving or not, ram air hoods, etc.

I have a WS-6. Would I be better off getting something similar to his Volant setup than getting a lid?

I'd say definitely. The lid is pretty good, but it still pulls a lot of warm air from the engine compartment, and it doesn't draw air directly from the hood scoops.

The Volant has a sealed box, so that it can only draw air from the hood induction. Drill out the baffles in the hood, and you have yourself a true Ram Air/Cold Air Indiction system
