Autometer adapter?
I bought the same setup, and I know what you are talking about. There is like a ring inside the adapter, and the 1/2" long cylinder on the sender won't fit down so the threads can even start threading together. That link above says to drill it out. I haven't done it yet, since I can see myself smoking the $8.95 adapter I paid for.
So for now, until I can read up on some more info, adapter/water temp gauge is sitting in the Summit box it came in.
I was able to get away with drilling and tapping a M12x1.5 bolt and using that as a sensor boss worked great. Took up alot less room, made it easier to get #8 plug when changing.

If you do a search for info like this on the forum before starting the job - more than likely you will find the info you need prior to buying items/starting the job. This has been gone over probably a hundred times by now.
I'm always pleasantly surprised at the amount of info/knowledge that can be found here...
