Default X-pipe placement / location

A few questions:

1. Why is everyone so insistent to place the X-pipe on a True Dual system near the front of the car?

2. Would it not be just as effective to run straight pipes all the way back, over the axle, and directly into a dual-inlet/dual-outlet muffler at the rear?

3. Anyone know flow numbers and back-pressure numbers to support your theory or opinion? Maybe a chart or dyno comparison?

Because a mid pipe is used for scavenging. So you want high velocity exhuast gas, which means hot and close to the engine.

Because of scavenging. There's also a thing called the exhaust pressure wave. Race cars often uses a resonation wve termination chamber. Pro-chamber make a setup for the sn95 Mustangs.

Flow is determined by area cross section and volume. An X pipe os not about flow.

As for dyno charts, NO. I've never seen any conclusive evidence. ANY mid pipe is good, it will reduce exhuast db levels and in most cases promote more HP.

But all setups are proven to work. X, H and yes even Y.

LG who make arguable the best headers for Corvettes use an X pipe on the their steet cars, however with their race car they convert the X to a Y pipe. If this had negative affect on HP they would not do it.

If you want a technical write up on exhaust design and purpose click the link in my sig (Exhuast/Induction). You want to read posts 6 and 13 onwards.

It's lenghty and quite detailed but will likely answer almost any question you are likely to have.

As a simple answer however. If you only plan on bolt on's to a bolt on cammed setup then pretty much ANY good off the shelf catback will perform as well as any other custom setup. There really won't be a massive difference.

Once you start pushing 500rwhp and more, that's the time to start and really think about exhuast design.
