2.5" vs. 3" Y-Pipe

I'm hoping to invest in a new set of headers in the future and one of the sets I'm most interested in comes with a 2.5" y-pipe. Since most people agree that 2.5" true duals are as adequate as 3" true duals for 95% of street driven vehicles, could the same be said of a 2.5" y-pipe? I assume so, but I thought it best to consult those more versed in the matter than I before finalizing my decision.

2.5 is plenty. Anymore and you get into ground clearence problems.

Yeah so am I sitting here with a dual 3" inlet and single 3.5" Y-merge feeling like an idiot now?
