Default Long drive open headers

Aside from the deafening noise, terrible gas mileage, unwanted attention from local highway authorities and bad gas mileage, what is the risk of doing damage to the heads/exhaust valves from running open headers for say 9 hours strait.
I need to get from Charlotte to Philly to pick up my girl friend, then I need to get from Philly to Albany NY, It's a 3 1/2 hour second leg, i think she might kill me.

Aside from what you mentioned and a very dirty undercarrage, you should be okay.

That plus burned O2's which will make your car run like ****.
I would at least run 2 to 3 ft of pipe on each header.

Default Ehaust gas inside car?

What about the exhaust gasses passing into the car? If the pipes don't extend out past the body, I would think that this might be a problem.

Remember, you can't smell Cabon monxide.

Besides that I don't think that 9 hrs in a straight exhaust car is too romantic. I used to wear earplugs when racing Enduros and Hare Scrambles because the noise in itself is tiring.

I drove mine for a week before getting in to the exhaust shop. Didn't even burn an O2, but some have.

As long as the car isn't just sitting idleing, the gases won't be an issue.

How long will it take to burn the O2 out. Would this still be the case if the motor was running extremely rich ??

I'm not a pro by far but I would almost think that the rich would be just as bad, at least as far as running goes and could possibly foul/burn them up becuase of the little element that heats a little bit to sniff appropiately. I think if it runs really rich it won't get as hot as it needs to be making the car runs bad/possibly burning it out? I'm not sure just my two cents! There is an injection pro in here that can probably say for sure!

The O2s need to be changed soon anyway, I need to turn all the codes off for no AIR, EGR, rear O2s, so i can have a look at my air fuel at 1500 in 6th, what's an ideal mix for cruising? I'll see about mocking up a section of pipe before I can get something more permanent.
Just got the right side O2 hooked up and finally go to go WOT and get to the red line, pulls a lot better than it did with stock manifolds, love the pace setters.

yeah well then maybe you don't have a lot to worry about if you are changing them soon, I'm not sure what a good ratio would be for cruising I would think something like 13 or 15 to 1? But I do know that if you are doing the tuning yourself you should tap in to the part throttle fuel map to tune for better economy while cruising, it helps out after the mods! There was a guy in Dallas who was getting 25MPG on a motor that was pushing well over 420hp NA, not solely because of the part throttle adjustment but it was definitley a help.

i drove around with open shortie headers and you wont' smell anything, but besides what you mentioned, you will want to watch the heat from your headers because there right under your *** where you will be sitting and that may cause problems because the heat will lurk, could burn your carpet i'm not sure thats the only thing i worried about when i drove around but being winter you may not have to worry about that i did it in 105 degree dry california heat.
