Default Need Help, driver side header install

I am installing Hooker Super Comp headers on a 99 T/A M6. I have the old exhaust completely off. The passenger side header slides right in. The driver side header would not go all the way in. I have heard about cutting the k-member or the steering shaft? What is your advice? I have a sawzall and angle grinder available. I need to get this back together tomorrow so quick help is appreciated!

When I installed my Jet Hots, I had to cut a piece of the block off to get the driver side to slide in. I also had to notch out the k member.

I had to notch my K member also, and got it in from the top. It was a pain in the *** but it can be done.

My Pacesetters went in from the bottom by myself with no cutting the casting block off, or notching the K member. I wonder why the Hookers are so hard?? The design between the two is not that much different. I guess that little bit makes the difference.

before you start hacking up your car remove the steering shaft. i had to remove the steering shaft on a friends header install, after that the driver side slid right in. its just two bolts, one on the top and one on the bottom. im pretty sure that will do the trick. i hope you didnt get to cutting allready!!

Did you try unbolting the motor mound and jacking on the engine? That did the trick with my pacesetters, I dunno know how much diff. the hookers are. Good luck on the header install

Deffinetly try this first. Real easy compared to hacking at your car. Its in between the steering shaft that comes out of the firewall and the steering box that works the rack. It has two swivel points in it like your drive shaft.

Talking

The advice on pulling the linkage did the trick for me.Thanks for the tip.The darn y pipe to the borla provided more trouble than the header install. It pushed the muff assembly back so now it hits the rearend at the over the pipe section.Ill take it to a muff shop to bend and cut to fit,it will be worth it.Btw my car at idle and cruise is more quite.Go figure that! But wot it screams.Curse air injection codes! Now for a beer and a little Gears of war to celebrate cause Iam to pooped to drive!

Thanks for all the advice. After reading this and getting back to the shop, it quickly became obvious that tapping in the floor board would do the trick. For me, the headers had no problem clearing the steering at all. So after only a few good taps with the hammer, it slid right in!!! I got the whole system installed now with an x-pipe with dumped bullets. After being patient and looking for some good used deals I pieced together the coated headers, sims, extendors and x-pipe for 500 shipped. It really felt rewarding getting the darn things on there and doing it myself... not to mention the $$ reward of not having to pay a shop to do it! The only thing is I could not imagine doing this and not having a lift to do the job, guess I really lucked out having a nice friend that has the keys to the shop he works at.
