That "steam" sounds to me like blow-by from compression rings or valve guid seals(worn). why did you remove your PCV system? sometimes this can cause oil leaks from high crank case pressure.

i swaped to center bolt valve covers with my new heads from the 98 style. the provisions were different for the lines and i hated those ugly looking lines. the motor has like 2500 miles on it I doubt stuff is worn on it.

That "steam" is blowby, which can't be avoided completely. Mine does it quite a bit (127k miles).

Your logic is backwards. A big *** vent for the crankcase gasses is going to reduce the pressure better than two 3/8" hoses (PCV system). If anything, your crankcase pressure is barely over atmospheric.

if you don't have your pcv system hooked up the blow by is getting through and instead of getting sucked out it just sits in your crankcase, this contaminates oil and is bad for the longevity of your motor. hense the reason motors from the 70's didn't last very long, that and loose tolerances. but to each his own, i just don't see why you wouldn't run it.

I think the reason for the motors not lasting long would have something to do with non od transmissions with excessive rpms at highway speeds, rather then not having an enclosed pcv system. PCV stands for positive crankcase ventilation, the little 3/8 pcv is a ton more restrictive than a breather system. I have found that since I deleted my pcv system and added the breather I have a smoother idle, since there isnt any recirculated air and oil entering into my intake.

Mine doesn't steam at all. I also have a small breather on the passenger side valve cover too.
