304 vs. 409
What are the main differences between these two type of stainless steels? It seems like the stainless steel headers are made out of one of these two types. I have the specs for the 304 ss in my engineering materials book of its strength, thermal expansions, etc. but am wondering why its better than 409 (dont have the specs for it)?

The 409 will actually surface rust, I believe due to it's lower nickel/chromium content. IDK about the thermal conductivity, etc. or other functional properties though.

yes 409 will rust on the surface
If you want more info on the differences, I have a materials book that I can look it up in. Online search could always dig up the same info also. From what I remember, most all oem's use 409 for the stock exhaust on vehicles. It is cheaper than 304 but last longer than alumnized tubing.
