You must not have heard too much about our cars. The crank pulley is not pinned, it uses an "interference fit" to keep it from spinning. This means that the pulley hole is just a tiny bit smaller than the crank. Sure the bolt will come out using an impact or a socket/breaker bar if you can keep the crank from spinning, but you're far from getting the pulley off. You have to use a 3-jaw pulley-puller to remove the crank pulley.
If you've got a 6-speed, you can throw it in 4th gear and remove the bolt as long as the clutch doesn't slip. With an automatic, you need to remove the starter and use a screwdriver to stop the flywheel from moving. There's a tool made especially for this sold somewhere though.
