High flow cats (i.e., Magnaflow cats) will pass the smog portion of the test. They technically won't pass visual but most techs aren't that picky, even in the state of CA.

I bet those JBAs added more than 10 rwhp. JBAs were part of me dynoing 344 rwhp with all the boltons.

Btw when are you getting your duals put on? Are you still going for the Bassani style, only custom? It would have been nice to have a before dyno, but definately plan for an after-dyno after all the boltons, to see where you are.

I used to have JBA shorties and then I got Pacesetter LT's and the LT's were way better.

I have been at the dyno when guys just do the ORY and its good for 4-5hp so I figured half of my gains were shorties and the other half was ORY. All of my stuff runs better when I wash it...even my 230k+mile beater S10 Ive got lol.

Custom based on the Bassani system..most likely will run a Dynomax two in two out muffler. Im job searching right now so big items on my list went into a holding pattern. Im going to slap on the pulley next week I think

If you look at the dyno graph that is withOUT the cats either, so from shorties and cat delete you gained 10 HP, most of that was probally from the cats.
AND I at least dont say shorties are pointless, had them on my old car and felt some difference, but IMO I would NEVER pay 600 for them, I got mine used for 70. If your goin to spend 600 either 1. do something else to the car or 2. Get a set of LT's

exactly. you arent comparing stock manifolds to shorty headers... everyone compares shorty headers to stock manifolds and cats. gutting the cats on your 00-02 F body will get you the same results without the headaches of headers.

Longtubes or stock 00-02 manis.

The guy who delivered my car damaged my stock ypipe and cats while driving the car down the ramp. I just bought a new stock catted ypipe from a guy on this board and won a set of new JBA Chrome shorties for $355.00 on Ebay. I know I wont gain big horsepower, but I know I'm certain I wont miss my ypipe banging the floorboard or grinding on every speed bump. I mostly bought them for looks and because they hook up to the stock ypipe. My days of driving in a vibrating car are over. I'll let you know if I feel any difference when they get installed.

I think that it is human nature to wanna feel some power increase after spending the time to work on a mod. I put in a new window motor and think that the car is running stonger. What if you took two identical cars, except one has shorties, and one has monifolds. Now let 20 non-biased drivers run them both without knowing which is which. Would the "butt dyno" results be conclusive? I doubt it. I'm not saying that BitViper is wrong or anyone is right or wrong, for that matter. I'm just saying that a non-scientific test on a mod that is probably only worth 5 HP at best is gonna be inconclusive.

My Firebird didn't drop anything in ET after installing Edelbrock shorties. It was louder and sounder better, but I think I only gained half a mile an hour in trap speed and that could have been due to weather conditions. They were only $90 brand new though, so I couldn't beat the price. I'm happy with them, but they're getting removed and sold this winter for some Pacesetters (Or some eBay headers when they release the race style).

Yes, I posted about seeing other guys dynoing with just a ORY and gettin 5 or so at the wheels so I figured 50/50 on the gain. I did get a huge drop in ET though and it ran 13.0s until I sold it in lat Sept.

I am pretty sure you can replace the cats on any car if certain criteria are meet. I think it is over 80,000 miles or they have failed.

Speaking of Butt Dyno's...I went looking for one...
Just install a great mod like a cold air intake? Electric supercharger? Big Muffler? Magnetic fuel line ionizer? Awesome wing? Are you getting no respect from your friends for your newly found power? As we all know, these are high end and sophisticated modifications. Some may be TOO sophisticated to actually show up on a traditional dyno. So here we have: The Butt Dyno. Simply place it in the seat, and drive fast, weaving in and out of traffic. (On a race course, of course.) Now you can tell your friends with confidence "That oil-saturated air filter gave me 20 horses!"

How about mid-tube headers like these? I've read that they're 50 state legal and they don't move the cats, but I've also heard that shorties are the only ones that are legal. Anybody know?

Those really aren't mid tube headers, they're shorties. They name them mid-tube as a marketing ploy, but if they don't move the location of the cats (like the ones in the link) they are shorties.

That's actually a good deal for shorties, especially for ones that have a carb number. You might want to edit your link, you forgot the "h" in front to say "http" not "ttp".
