installing headers on a 01 Z28
installing headers on a 01 Z28 a buddy of mine just bought an 01 Z28 m6 car and wants to put long tube headers and a y pipe with no converters.i will probably be doing all or most of the work so what is the best way to put on a set of long tubes? also what should we do about not having cats on it,sould he put o2 simulators on it or what? and just so you know they will be pace setter long tubes and y pipe.
take your time!!!! they go in through the bottom. have one of you up top holding the headers and starting a bolt in and have one below to hold them.
start the back bolts first as a word of advice...
to hell with the 02 sims spend the money and have a dyno tune or a good mail order tune done and you wont ned them. you get the advantage of having it tuned and deleting out any trouble codes

The Higher you raise the car, the easier the install will be. You MAY also have to remove the steering linkage. I had to. Its pretty straight forward install. Gearwrenches or the equivelent made the install THAT much easier.

I just got done with my header install less than an hour ago, a 10mm gear wrench and an air ratchet are your best friends. I did have to grind the casting tab off the block though, I have Pacesetters. 
You can't buy O2 sims anymore. You can, however, have the codes deleted by anyone who has HPTuners/EFI Live/LS1edit. Read the EGR/AIR/Rear O2 sticky at the top of this section, as well as the other stickies for install guides.
the install should be fairly straight forward. i put a set on that had great clearance everywhere and didn't have to take the steering shaft loose and we were careful and even left the plugs in.take the coil packs/ bracket off and it will be alot eaiser.

Slow Trap helped me with mine, the worst thing about the whole install was putting the Y-pipe together. Texas Speed Y-pipes blow, before you get started on the install, grind the inside of the pipe pieces down because their hard to get together, you might want to use some kind of grease also, as we had too. You will probably have to file the outside of the header collector down as well; it's difficult to fit the Y-pipe over it at first. Oh, and don't tighten the bolts on the y-pipe down untill you get it installed, you'll probably have to adjust it to get it in. Hope this helps...
