I did mine yesterday with a coupler, but i don't like how it fits. it doesnt leak but i don't trust it. I'm gonna go with a full length line just for piece of mind and it will look alot better.

I used a 2 foot piece of 5/16 hose from AutoZone, and 2 screw down couplers. It was the perfect length very neat, but trying to tie the line to the radiator is a bitch make sure you tighten those couplers very well.

i did it to mine and it got pretty cold here this year and my car still ran fine. P.S. you will probably gain nothing from this except a less cluttered throttle body. and the feeling of doing something to your car.

i did mine yesterday and i just bought a 5/16 brass fitting that connected the two hoses. afterwards i zip tied it down so it was out of the way from any moving parts. did it in about ... 15 min. also the coolant flows from the driver side to passenger side of the TB

sorry somewhat off topic however; will T tapping the hose going from radiator, through TB, and into the motor be a good place to get accurate readings for an Autometer water temp gauge? Also which way is the colant flowing?

oops. Meaning that the coolant moving from driver to passenger side would be as hot as the bottom of the block optional temp sensor location?

I never understood this mod. I get what people are trying to accomplish, but seriously- how much can the air really get heated for the brief instant it's passing through the throttle body? Not to mention the fact that the underhood heat already gets the TB up to scalding temperatures, with or without coolant running through it, so what's the point?

If you stop and think about what coolant actually does, it seems like the reason for the coolant flow through the TB is to remove heat, not keep the plate from sticking. I mean, that's why it flows through the block, right? So why does everyoen assume that it wouldn't give the same benefit in a TB?

I know I'm going to get flamed for this, but I've scratched my head about this "mod" for years and never seen the benefit.

I did a calculation on this a while back, and showed that the coolant does not significantly raise the temperature of the intake air as it moves through the TB:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/showthrea...ight=tb+bypass

Basically, the conclusion is that the TB bypass mod helps reduce only the overall ambient temperatures under the hood, which can sometimes provide small power gains. The reduction in overall temperatures under the hood helps to cool the rest of the engine components (intake, ect.), which can help reduce the overall air charge temperature slightly. The TB was originally heated to help prevent TB icing under extreme (and rare) atmospheric conditions. This can occur because of the venturi effect of the air flowing through the TB restriction, combined with the presence of water vapor and a very cold air charge temp.

That's a very good explanation- thanks. I still don't see how changing the routing of 18 inches of coolant flow can reduce underhood temps, but to each their own.

The coolant heats up the entire throttle body to 200 degrees or so, and the TB radiates the heat to everything else under the hood. Once again, the effect is small but not completely insignificant.

i thought the fitting on the radiator was 5/16's and the one on the engine was 1/4"? i bought a 1/4" hose and it sounds like i may have got the wrong size. I just want to use one size hose to eliminate the adaptors...

ok... here's my question. why do you even need to "bypass" it? from what i was just looking at on my car, there's an elbow coming off the engine from a small hardline that has a T on it. that elbow goes through the throttle body and returns to the radiator. why wouldn't you just put a cap on that hardline T and a cap on the radiator return and just remove that hose alltogether? it doesn't do anything besides return coolant from the engine in a small tube that goes through the throttle body. the only reason i can see that hose returns to the radiator is because it goes through the TB...
