I ran a 160 with the related fan settings for a couple years and then blew my motor. The stat had nothing to do with the motor blowing but, when I took it apart the pistons and combustion chambers were LOADED with carbon. When I put the new motor in I put in a 180 stat and related fan settings.
After a score or so trips to the track and probably 100-150 runs, I have tried running everything from a cold engine to literally hot lapping 1/4 mile runs in warm weather. From times run on the same nights with various coolant temps, I can't tell that coolant temps make a bit of difference in power - if anything, the car seems to be stronger running in the 200 degree range (which is around where fan settings are for a 180 stat).

I have a hypertech 180 deg one. I had to replace my stock one when it stuck shut once last winter.

Why not just get the 180...meet yourself halfway. Your still replacing the stock with a high performance high dollar themostat...AND it is lower temp. than stock...without all the horror stories you have heard so far for the 160...
Personally I run stock...I think GM wanted our cars to run aroun 200* for a reason IMO.

not that this has anything to do with it but - why the hell did GM put the 10 bolts in these cars? they suck! in my opinion some things gm did stock is fine but some crap. i went with a 160 and it runs great i mean if ur in a colder climate area than i am go with like a 180.
