For all those people who bought a brand new LS1 F-body or vette and have noticed a tapping or ticking or a similar noise to which the dealer said was normal please goto the link below.
Heres the link to the post http://www.ls1.com/forums/showthread.php?s=6b5eb76ebdfa2deda 41155e14d72a7f5&threadid=60315&perpage=15&pagenumb er=1
So if anyone else has an LS1 with engine problems at was not due to mechanical over rev. be sure to voice your concern

Re: LS1 "normal" noise
My Z28 makes noise when it's cold, it sounds like a collapsed lifter to me (old school experience). Doesn't sound like a rod or bearing knock to me, it's solid like a lifter, not hollow sounding. The noise seems to go away once it's warmed up. I may go back to 5w-30 at my next oil change and see if that helps, I'm running 10w-30 right now. The car is only 8 months old and shouldn't have any odd noises at this point, it's had regular oil changes and for the most part I baby her.

Re: LS1 "normal" noise
My 01 has a definate tick at idle which is more pronounced under cold start but its far from a knocking noise. My 00 Ta made the same noise but not quite as pronounced. The only complaint I have is the damn pcv sucking oil like 5 dollar hooker.

Re: LS1 "normal" noise
i dont really hear the noise on my 01. maybe im just oblivious to it, or its not there
at any rate, would there be any potential problems if there were overboard cylinders? my cars running really nice and i dont want to start over with a slow engine

I hear this noise from start up to shut down. Sometimes it goes away for a few minutes and then when I'm feeling sorta better about the problem it shows up again. VERY VERY ANNOYING

Re: LS1 "normal" noise
I have a 2000 TA with the knock at startup then a slight tick at operating temp. I did have an oil pump failure at 8600 miles which the dealer replaced but I don't think thats the cause of my knock.

Re: LS1 "normal" noise
My 02 WS6 had some ticking when cold. But after I made two oil changes, it has gotten more quiet and less noticeable. Piston slap, from my experience with traditional Pontiac motors, is a more deeper sound that seems to originate deep in the motor. Many times you can hear it better from under the car. A rod knock usually has a double knock to it and often shows a unstable oil pressure. The ticking noise I hear from my 02 sounds like a small amount of over lash in the rockers that may be caused by a sticking lifter. But once oil temp and engine temp increases, the noise vanishes. I would get a second and third opinion prior to having a motor yanked for piston slap, or anything else for that matter.

Re: LS1 "normal" noise
A way to tell if its piston slap is to retard the timing while the engine is running. This will reduce the load on the piston and quiet the slap some or completely. Piston slap is more common in engines with forged pistons. Forged pistons require more cylinder wall clearance than cast because the expand more when hot. Consequently, once the motor is warm the piston slap will be more quiet or stop completely. Another way to aid in diagnosis is to kill the cylinder with the excessive slap and this will reduce the load and stop the slapping.

Just curious guys,
I do not have this problem but have you guys tried to use a scan tool durring the sound? Wouldnt the K.S. pick up any sort of internal noise and register it as a knock? I know on my old tpi motor that stupid thing will pick up something that I sure couldnt hear and call it knock. Just a thought.

Re: LS1 "normal" noise
The GM guy's call it cold start tick and have had to replace the whole entire ls1motors for upset customers who complained about the noise. I know because I bought one entire ls1 motor for 600.00. It was a warranty motor because someone complained about the cold start tick (PISTON SLAP) deal....
I will buy them all day long for that and use them in my car....

I should say it _did_ do this, since lately the noise has not appeared - I don't think I've heard it since the last oil change, where I used 1/2 10W30 synthetic and 1/2 5W30 dino oil. The other thing about this noise is I'm pretty sure it's not piston slap, since I've also heard that sometimes (but not most of the time) after a cold start, and that's a different sound, more muted and hollow sounding.

I see no movement at all in the oil pressure gauge when this noise happens. My ’99 Z also did this in almost the same manner. I’m not worried about it though. I have bigger issues to concern myself with. I would buy a spare motor for $600 to if this was the only thing wrong with it Mine’s done it since new and never gotten any worse or better

Engine ticking
Just picked up an 02 SS with 25,000 miles immaculate condition a few months ago and I have noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine at idle and at speed not accelerating. It has always had Mobil 1 10/30 fully synthetic oil and Mobil 1 oil filter. I don't think it's anything damaging but it's annoying and with it having such low miles I wouldn't think it be making any noises like that. Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated
