Default Header's or Cam? Help me out 11 second guys

I have gotten it to 12.6's at 107 but I want low 12's or high 11's.

I have a Vig3600, catback, 3.73's and a few free induction mods. I want to eventually go with a cam but I have been told to go headers first. I pull consistent 1.68 60's but the car feels like it loses some at the top with the big Vig. I want to keep the #7 pump because I eventually want to go fast!!!

What do I do? Headers I'm sure will help out some but maybe not the amount I hope for.

BTW that 12.6 was on the limiter at the 2-3 shift.

Any help would be appreciated.
Later, Stu

Get headers. The cam won't do too much good without them. The extra exhaust would have nowhere to go. The headers should get you to 12.3-12.4, without them I don't think the cam would get you any better times, maybe not as good.

I don’t really know how much you can gain with a cam and stock headers. I’m going to find out though

I’m putting a B1 in early next month but I have yet to choose headers, so will see just how far the stock manifolds with an ORY and a good catback can take. I’d think there should still be something to gain. The stock manifolds on these cars don’t look nearly as bad as the old LT1 and L98 ones did...

I think generally makes sense to do headers then a cam. If you are going to run stock manifolds and not get headers, a split duration cam would be a good choice. A 218/224 .56X Comp would be a decent cam under the circumstances. For more aggressive performance a 220/228 or even a 224/230 could be considered.

You may need programming to get the most out of a cam and not have SES light issues. A 212/218 115 cam rarely needs programming in an A4.

I think a single pattern might still be good as long as you’re not going to run cats and you’ve got a good catback or cutout. Some people even feel that with a header car you might benefit from a reverse split pattern (more intake duration), so with manifolds a single pattern might be just right. Also, if you’re going to get headers later than better to get a cam that will suit your “final” setup, IMO. Most cars seem to gain about 35 to 40 rwhp or more with a B1 through headers. I expect to gain about 15 to 20 through stock manifolds/ORP/good catback.

Jake99SS on here was running a T1 through stock manifolds and said the gains were still nice above 3500rpm to redline. I think he still had stock cats too

Ok peoples. Solid track results coming at you....

As a bolt-on car with a Vig 2800 I ran 12.43 @ 108 MPH with stock manifolds.

I then added a T1 cam, in nearly identical conditons I went a 12.11 @ 111 MPH.

Then with some fiddling on my launch and pro-stars on the front, I ran an 11.98 @ 112.64 MPH, still with stock manifolds.

So, I gained 3 tenths with just a cam change. With a cam change and skinnies I improved .45 seconds and 4 MPH. Not bad IMO.

I just recently upgraded to a bigger Yank and Macs. We will see what the improvements are, I am 'hoping' for 11.6s.

Hey Kenny. Did you upgrade your springs? What does the T1 pull to? I would really like to shift at 6200 but she runs out of gas at about 5700.

Thanks dude. Later, Stu

Don't know what you have as far as mods, so if you don't already have any of these, this should get you low 12's for sure.

Lid, FTRA, and a Cutout.

should get you low 12's @ 110mph or so.
