Default Headers and running lean...does it happen?

I've been doing alot of reading here, and was wondering if there was any concreate proof that you are going to need/it's a good idea after running ATAP, a MAFT while installing headers.

Being that I am going to CA here in 10 days, I CAN NOT be emmissions illegal, as the TA is going to be my daily driver, is there any suggestions for a header that is worth the $$, as well as has a CARB #?

It seems that those that are installing headers, are becoming a tad lean, and leaner is not allways meaner, atleast when it is comming out of my checkbook.

After installing SLP LT's ATAP indicated my 2001 was running pig-rich (.975). I put in a set of MAF ends and cleared that right-up (.880, no KR).

Headers do make the car leaner. But the computer senses this and adds fuel to get the correct A/F ratio at idle and cruise. The problem is that the computer locks a table for WOT that is to rich.So people get an MAFT to lean out the topend to recover there lost power.
And longtubes headers are not legal because they move the cats. That doesn't stop us though. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

I was thinking of a set of midlength headers, yet from what Ive heard, that the movement of the cats automatically fails you on the SMOG test.

As for the leaning out on the top end, thats good info, didnt know that there.
I think that I will try to find a set of headers that actually have a carb number, and go from there.
Are there any out there that are worth the funds that they are asking for?

Since you can't legally remove or reposition the cats, the only headers you could use are shorties. I think the only ones with the CARB seal are JBA's. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

To remain legal in California, I believe you're going to be stuck with a shorty of some kind. If I remember correctly the Edelbrocks also have CARB#, but I'm sure that the JBA's do. From what I've seen, you can expect something like 8-12rwhp gain with the shorties at best.
If you are indeed stuck with shorties, you may consider giving LPE a call. A while back they told me they were developing a new F-body shorty header to be fabbed by B&B. It was to be a 1-3/4" primary tube instead of the 1-5/8" used by all the other shorty headers. I would imagine that the larger primary tube would allow you to make a bit more power. Of course since it'll be an LPE part I'm sure it won't be cheap.
