It's there simply to protect the motor from anything that might get past the air filter. Some say that it also straightens out the airflow (and it may) but I think the added air volume and speed help even more. I removed mine last summer, no problems whatsoever.
Proof is in the '02 Corvette Z06s MAF: no screen right from the factory! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Remove it. It made a big difference in my car. Leans out the air/fuel mixture.

I bought a descreened unit from the local hot rod shop owner who "ported" his MAF. His port job was mostly just removing the screen. It works great on my car, because my car 2000 SS was running pretty rich. I swapped my thermostat to a 160 degree unit to deal with the leaner mixture and increase tendancy for detonation. But I can definitly feel the difference. Roughhammer recommends MAF descreen and cutout as the best & cheapest two mods to make.

Good luck,
Scott
