Default Couple Exhaust questions...

Ok I have a few questions....

Do different headers sound different?

I plan on going with pacesetters with an ORY and I keep hearing about a gas smell in the interior....will a single cat placed where the Y meets get rid of this? OR would It be better to to go with 2, one on each pipe?

I do plan on going with cutouts BEFORE the cats for those times I plan to race.

Also which headers should I get the race headers? or the emission headers? I have an 01 Trans Am.

Does anyone out there have pacesetters with a ORY with a HOOKER catback? If so how does it sound? I want a deep throaty tone, not raspy at all.

Yes, headers do sound a little different than your stock manifolds. I have a 00 T/A and I got the race headers. There is definitely a gas smell but it isn't too strong.

Forget about the gas smell if you're stock cam. I dont have any smell that I can detect. It may change once you get a cam, but Im not too sure about that yet. Im gonna be doing my cam this weekend. I can promise you that it wont be overpowering if there is a smell though. I had a big block '68 pontiac tempest with milled heads, 244/244 cam, hooker headers w/ h pipe and flowmasters, holley 650 double pumper, no carpet, holes in the floor, and no smell.

I didnt mean do headers sound different than stock manifolds...I mean like will hooker headers have a different tone than say pacesetters?

I think i will just do catted to be "safe" meaning less likely to get a ticket when I get pulled over and just to be sure there wont be any gas smell....Im running cutout right after the cat/cats as well.

no sound difference, why are you doing a cut out after the cats? makey no sensey... if your doing a cutout you want it in the place where you benefit the most from it (before the cats!) otherwise its pretty much pointless, all your doing is bypassing the muffler

there is definitely as gas smell if you don't have cats... maybe you have inhaled too much of the fumes but seriously it isn't that bad, they only way i notice the smell is if I am stopped with the windows down and the wind is blowing from back to front on my car

I cant speak for what happens to the exhaust smell of an LSX with a cam or heads, but I can say that the smell of gas isnt even worth considering as a factor. If you rev it up right after you start it up then sure, you'll smell gas. But, you're concerned with performance, remember? Thats just the nature of the beast. Plus its not even all that noticeable. Go ORY and forget about the gas smell. I promise it wont bother you. Its not like you're huffing gasoline. Cars have been made without cats, you know. They did it for a long long time. If it didnt bother the women of the 60s in corvettes, then you shouldnt concern yourself with it.

I've got a TSP Y pipe that I dont need anymore. Im not sure what to ask for it though, and if I can even get it apart to ship it (U clamps).

Im in VA. The fit was fine, other than how much fun it was to adjust. The ground clearance wasnt all that great, but if you spent some time or took it to a shop they could get it right. Theres a dent in the drivers cat, and the pipes were all U clamped together...so they're all crimped and wont come apart. I dont know how I would ship it, other than to cut it. But, I would let it go for $100 plus shipping. It still worked fine, I just wanted an ORY. $300 new. Like I said though, I would most likely need to cut it to ship it. If anyone is interested I will get some pics.
