Default Funny sound when coasting out of gear

I didnt know which forum to post this on, but I figure this is the best place. I have an '02 SS with the 6-speed, about 3k on the clock. I get this odd kind of clunking sound coming from the behind the rear seats (rear end?) when I take my car out of gear an coast to a stop from almost all MPH except for under 5mph or so. What do you guys think this is? Could it be me rear end making the noise or could it be my SLP factory installed exhaust??? I have noticed that my exhaust is pushed about .5" farther under my car than most other SS's I have seen, could that be the problem? I also notice a real slight dinging sound (metal on metal, but not real hard) from around the same area when I bump the car righ....any ideas what this could be?? I am thinking it is my exhuast and I am going to play with it this week when I put my Bassani offroads and y-pipe. Thanks for any help. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />

I was under there this weekend when I painted my calipers and I didnt see or feel anything clearance problems, but then again...all the wheels were off and the rear end was unloaded. I will play with it this week to see if I see anything with the rear end on the ground, but I am just wondering if anyone else has had and solved this problem before.

Having the wheels off should make it a lot easier to spot. The rear end of Top Fuel and Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars make a strange whirring sound when their motors break and the rear end gets unloaded. The car is basically coasting across the finish line at that point when you hear this noise. You can only hear this sound when there is no other car running in the other lane since their engines are a heck of a lot louder than the noise the rear end makes. Since your not driving a Fuel Car on the street it's worth checking into more closely.

Mine does the same thing! It sounds like a rattling noise but deeper like a low pop or clunk. Mabye this should go to the drivetrain section because I doubt it is exhaust related.

EDIT: BTW I have only 8K miles.

Here are some details for what mine is doing:
• If I slowly come to a stop, out of gear, I hear/feel a clunking from the rear of the car
• Dealer replaced fluid (and friction additive)...still clunks
• Dealer replaced bearings, housing, and a few other parts (~$2100 under warranty)...still clunks
• Clunks when the rear end is not under load (i.e. going down a hill with cruse control on)
• If you leave the car in 4th as you slowly come to a stop, you will hear the clunking noise at around 40 km/h
• If you are driving and the gear your are in is too high for you speed this will often result in a clunking noise

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason

The clunking noise can also be produced by repeatedly engaging and disengaging the gas pedal at a low RPM.

I think I know what noise you guys are talking about because I have noticed it when I come to stop sometime, especially when I am pulling into my driveway but when I got under the car to check it out, I was pushing and pulling on thing to see if it was loose and it kinda sounded like a heat shield banging on the floor and things around it. Nothing else made a similar noise and I checked the wheels and rotors too but still nothing. I dont see how it could be rear end, especially on such low milage cars. Any other opinions?

Tighten the bolts on your torque arm, including the one on the tailshaft of the tranny.
