Question Exhaust banging....How did you fix it?

I have searched and picked up some ideas.....but I want some more.

After installing my Kooks long tubes, and Kooks Catted Y-Pipe, I have a tapping exhaust somewhere on hard acceleration......How did you guys fix this?

I don't know where it is hitting. It is only on hard acceleration, and there are no wear marks where it has been hitting.

I have heard that you can get heater hose and wrap it around the y-pipe, or any other close part to stop the banging......is this a "rigged" solution??

I have tried using a pry bar while it was loose, then tightened it up, and it is better, but still there.

Any other ideas???......

Poly motor mounts....it was the only way I could get rid of mine. The banging is definitely the Y pipe on the floorboard.

or you can take it to a exhaust shop and have them bend the ypipe a little bit to get the clearnce

Thats the best option, and the way to do it right.

Mine touches the floor wheile the engine is off, and it vibs bad while its running. I'm just getting a whole new exhaust though, Y-pipe is a garbage setup.

Just get Poly motor mounts to keep the engine from moving as much and tuck your exhuast up tight to the car. Problem fixed.

That would work, but I think the "right" or "better" way to do it would be to go with poly mounts. I have poly's in my car, my Y pipe sits tucked up very high to the floorboard, and doesn't bang. That way you don't lose ground clearance.

to find out where its banging...have someone go look under the car while you hold the brake and the gas a little bit to say 1500 rpm. just before the tires start to spin...thats how i found where mine was hitting

Depending how many miles you've got on your car your mounts could look like mine at 96k.

The problem is that poly mounts won't help anything if the Y-pipe is tight against the floor at all times. They might stop it from moving up and down and banging, but the vibrations will still be there, and it will still be contacting the floor.

Poly mounts are a good idea, but the only way to fix it is to have the y-pipe bent down or just get a totally new exhaust, which is what I'm planning on doing.

As a band aid till you get something done you can wedge a piece of radiator hose inbetween the touching parts till you do something more permanent.

How are the added vibrations felt in the drivers seat with poly motor mounts?

The exhaust doesn't touch the floor board at all, until I am at full acceleration....then it's hits more than Ike on Tina Turner .....

Mine was hitting on the torque arm. Took the y off and put a little dent in it and no more banging for me.

I fixed mine by loosing the entire exhaust system from the header at the head back to the muffler. Then I placed in some 1 inch thick pieces of wood on all the trouble areas between the pipe and the floor board. Re-tightend everything starting from the rear and working my way foward. Removed the wood spacers. No mounts needed though I have some now.

I had a custom y made, and it banged during acceleration and turning on the driver's side. I went back and the exhaust guy installed a hanger on that side, and no more banging.
