Default Why not modify the stock lid?

What is the disadvantage of just removing the fins in the stock lid? Even if you don't get the inside smooth as glass, it should still perform about the same as the pricey aftermarket lid. Right?

it would still have those two big chambers on either side. plus if you starting to penny pinch before getting a lid you need to find a new hobby fast

If you compare them side by side, you'll see how an aftermarket lid is also taller, which allows more airflow. An aftermarket lid also has a lot less restriction since it doesn't have fins or baffles.

I guess my question should have been - besides not having the fins, what makes the aftermarket lid any better? I understand the fins restrict airflow, but what else makes it "better"?

It's the resonator part that really sucks. You can play
with Bondo and a Dremel if that makes you happy. But
the stock lid still has a square neck etc. and all the
aftermarket ones are nice and smooth. Look at them
side by side and you probably won't see a clean way
to turn A into B.

i'm with that guy - pricey aftermarket lids??? you can't afford $100 for a lid???

DONT modify the car, race the car, or even drive the car - you wont be able to afford any of it.

im not saying to cheap out. the way i read it is if he modified it himself, would it be just as good. therefore, if he was able to make something equal to it himself, i dont see that as cheaping out. it wouldn't seem to work in this case, but that is why he asked before he wasted his time.

it's already been explained, they're not the same without the fins and/or the resonators.

airflow and velocity w/ out turbulence can not be matched to aftermarket lids.

From what I've read on this site, it just seems that it's hit or miss that your $100+ could net you 1) a part that does not fit correctly, letting dirt into your motor; or 2) a part that will crack, letting dirt into your motor. Both suck for the money and an advertised "up to 12 HP".

If I spent an hour or two in the garage modifying the stock part (that by the way does fit and hasn't cracked in 6 years) and I can get ~8hp, that's fine by me. I don't think I'll miss 4hp at the crank.

BTW - this is my daily driver. My "hobby" is turning a '64 Malibu SS into a G-machine. Those don't have "Lids".

I'm not trying to be an ***, I just like asking "why" and I'm into actually tinkering instead of buying.

Thank you to those giving meaningful answers. I really do appreciate it.

thats cool, i wasnt trying to be stupid, but i just thought it was funny way to look at one of the most cost effective ways to get power. after all the TB bypass is free and i think its another great way to get a few extra HP
THe first mod i did was an SLP lid so thats why i push that. I didnt really see too much of a difference until i took off the original lid and compared them. and it really is those resonaters that kill the factory one. If you can get rid of those try it, but i think another upside of an aftermarket lid is a little cleaner looking engine bay

Another big factor is the transition from oval to round...I have read that the stock transition from oval to round at the MAF creates poor velocity..and lids help that greatly.
