compression test??? whats the correct way to do it? title says it all. Im doing a compression test and I want to know the correct way to do it. All plugs out? motor need to be warm or cold?
take all of the plugs out if you are going to turn it over by hand. pull your fuel injector fuse, unplug your coils, and hook a handheld starter switch to your starter to turn it over electronically.
Unless you're looking for an obvious dead cyl. a compression test is a comparison tool... So it previous readings were cold, repeat with cold. Although I like to do them with a warm motor.
Remove all the plugs, Hook up the tester to 1st cyl and fully depress pedal (cable TB only). This will cut cranking fuel (via pcm values) and allow very easy cranking via unrestricted intake draw. Spin it over 3-4 times and record the reading. Release pressure on tester and repeat for all the cyl.
If you have a cyl that is down >10% try squirting a very small amount of oil in the cyl and repeat the test, if the numbers come in line then your rings are damaged or worn. Otherwise it may be valves or gasket. In which case a leakdown would would pinpoint the problem more closely.
