a lot of people use them for msd wire because most but not all hit the header. As long as the wire is not directly up against the header you should be able to do without them.

My first set of MSD's cooked on the header. Didnt read the box enough to figure out they could be bent. My second set I bent 2 that touched a have an easy 1/4 inch at the closest. thats plug boot to header. Thats plenty of room. I had a misfire in cyl 6 which the plug boot was fine. My #4 was cooked but didnt miss. And my misfire only showed up when I mistakingly put the pass side o2 sim in the primary spot.
I reused them for that "just incase" purpose. They didnt make the install that much worse, you just have to guess more and listen when putting them back on to make sure the wires are on all the way.
