Check all your terminals. The positive lead on mine was corroded bigtime and caused some low readings when the ac was on like yours. If everything is ok your battery still might be on its way out. Cheap rebuilt alternators aren't the best either. I've also heard the exciter wire on the alternator is a problem point as well, check to make sure it's in good condition and connected well.

Doublecheck the exciter wire connection on the top of the alternator.

If that's not it, get the new alternator tested.

Hey, where exactly is this "fuse" in the wire? I've been having a hard time with the exciter wire and trying different connections to stop the lights from dimming but no matter what kind of connection I try they still flicker. Maybe it's this "fuse". Could you please tell me where to find it exactly?

Thanks,
Shawn

Every once and while mine does the same thing. Why the hell would GM use a 24 gauge wire (translation, piano wire thin) in an area of the motor that you would work in. I'm guessing that my wire probably has a short in it somewhere, so I need to trace it back to the PCM and swap it out, but I plan on replacing it with something beefier, like 16-18 guage unless someone says otherwise.

if yall follow the wire starting at the connector pin from the alternator and go up about 6'' you will see the wire flare out. thats where the fuse is located at. go down to the auto parts store and pick one up they are a few bucks. forget the technical term.

Sweet I have the flickering headlights and the intermittent voltage drop too. Hopefully the fuse will fix this, I was having a hard time believing it was my alternator since it only has 27k miles on it.

A quick question, if it were a fuse, wouldn't it be either an on/off type situation? If the fuse is blown, then no current is going to be getting to the alternator and you'd be running strictly off battery power and it would never charge.

Just thinking out loud.

I checked the wire last night and went from the plug to about a foot up and then as far as I could along the fuel rail but still didnt find anything. Is this maybe a year specific thing? I have a 99 TA...

On another note, I was actually able to reinsert the wire into the plug prong but now I'm having trouble with the headlight motor turning and locks activating on their own when I'm just putting the negative cable back. I don't know if this is a relay thing or something but I really need help!!

Thanks,
Shawn

Well, I pulled the plug off the top of the alternator and checked the connection and everything looked good. I undid the protective covering all the way back to #3 fuel injector and didn't see any fuse. I did pop the cover off the pcm, and checked the resistance from the pcm back to the plug and got 0.01 ohm, so if there is a fuse, it's not blown.

When I plugg the wire harness back in, it did seem kind of loose, so we'll see what happens the next time I drive the car.

A fuse is just a switch that you can't change by hand. Its either on or off a bad fuse would stop voltage from reaching its destination completely. Is it a short in the smaller than thermostat wire thats causing the voltage irregularities? I have a problem with an extreme dimming comming off of a rev or coasting down from like 25. Aside from that I have the normal voltage regulator issue of pulsing lights.
