Default which cam

I got a 99 z28 I want to purchase a cam a small one I dont want a supercar just a decent little power boost I live in california and deal with the emissions laws also I have a automatic and I dont want to have to get a torque convter I was looking at this 63-LS-212/218 Comp Cams LS1 Camshaft - 212 / 218 .522 / .529 114 LSA 1200-6000 RPM Power Band. Excellent low-end power. Mild Camshaft, great for automatic cars with the stock or mild aftermarket torque converter and daily drivers. Works well with Crane 1.8 Roller Rockers. Its on thunderracing.com any adivce you guys can give me?

get somethign with more lift built in...save the expense of the rockers and you won't be leaving power on the table.

the TR 224 on a 114 lobe has shown to pass emissions in cali on lots of cars, with the right tune.

i've even hurd of guys running 2 ECMs so that they can have a hot tune for the street and a "smog" tune for the test.

212/218 is not a mild cam, that is a very small cam. Cams such as the 224/224 are very well known for producing good power throughout the power band as well as having great driveability and working well with the stock converter. I had the 224/224 on my other car with the stock tune and drove around fine for quite a while.

Here 's the thing, they guy wants a cam that will give him some extra power. He dosen't drive the car too hard and has been made aware of the problems of the A4. So he doesn't plan having to get a rebuild soon. He wants too use his stock stall, and gears. I personallly recommended the 224. But that would probaly need a higher stall.

What do you guy's think about the hot cam with stock stall. Idea is to add some power with a cam and tune, but not stress the trans as much as possible.

I think the people that have switched to a hot cam are generally pleased with the decent bump in hp. I know many people that have run the 224 on the stock stall and still have great 1/4 mile times.

One option is the LS6 cam for cheap $100 in classifieds.

A popular choice in cali is a 218/218 114

I don't know if it will pass emissions but a 224/224 114 is a NO BRAINER if it will pass smog for you.

Main thing is he's not planning to make the extra expense of having to rebuild his A4 anytime soon, so he wants something that can give him some extra power and still not beat up the trans to bad.

The cam won't affect his trans.

I'd never put anything smaller than a 224 in mine.

The guy is looking for some extra power and since we all know how an A4 will react to heat and extra rpm, he's looking for somthing that wont stress the trans to much.

You guys think he could get away with a 224 and stock stall?

Yes, I drove like that for well over a year and the guy I sold the car to is still driving it with that cam on the stock stall with no problems. The cam isn't going to wear down on his transmission, the only thing that will stress the tranny is a stall or how he drives the car.

spend an extra $150 and install a good trans cooler....geez.

any increase in power has the potential to damage a transmission, or to at least shorten it's life. but there is no way to say "this cam will but that cam won't" when it comes to the choices you're listing.

like i said above, heat is the major killer of the auto trans...so get a cooler and you should be fine.

Yeah I'll support the trans cooler.

Heat and rpm is the main thing that will kill a trans. I also doubt a cam will destroy the A4, and if it has a conservative tune less worries.
