Default Header gains on 2000 and up cars...

Just wondering what you guys got for gains on cars that are 2000 and up with minimal mods (i.e. stock heads)with a set of longtubes. I know that the 2000+ cars get less increase than the 98-99 cars due to the better flowing manifolds, even seen some people say they only got 6RWHP out of LT's. Is this the norm ?

6 rwhp out of LTs. Normal, hell no. Shorties even give more than that. On all nearly stock LS1s you're looking at a 20 rwhp gain, give or take a few.

i got a 2000 ta and added mac headers with the offroad y pipe and saw my hp go from 332 to 338 and an additional 6 tourque. the headers i bought off a friend had them on his 99 and he gained 22 to the ground. the manifolds on the 2000+ flow much bettter than the 98-99.

There was an article in hot rod a couple months ago with an 01 ss i believe that gained 16rwhp with hookers and ory. The camaro was dynoed with manifolds and no cats prior to the headers

Well, I don't have dyno numbers for you but I do have some track times, sort of.

My 02 Z28 with SLP 2OTL, Whisper lid and a Yank ST-3800 ran 12.6 @ 105. I ported my TB, swapped the lid for a TSP lid, added an ASP UD pulley and a set of Mac midlengths with ORY. I know the UD is worth about .1 and the ported TB with a TSP lid is maybe worth another .1 but I ran a 12.1 @ 110. That's .5 better and taking .2 off for the lid, TB and pulley, it's obvious the headers are worth a good bit.

I just ordered a set of Jet-Hot LT's but I highly doubt I'll see any drastic improvements until I add a set of heads and a cam.

Also when you guys add headers it sometimes leads to your car running rich which will rob you of horsepower until you get it tuned. Just a thought.

DITTO!

You should ask what kind of gains did people get with Headers that are TUNED! Otherwise, its a crapshoot, some people get "lucky", other don't. But with tuning, the luck factor is eliminated...

Tommy

PS I'm never lucky!

My gains were with LS1 Edit tuning to get -2 LTFT's and 2% taken from the PE vs RPM table to compensate for a richer mixture with headers.

Just a thought, but 98-99 cars have a different cam than 2000+.

More info. I have an 00 SS and thought I would get around 40 hp. If I am only going to get 16hp and 20 lbs torg it isn't worth the headache. Keep the topic going.

I have a 2000, and the 00's have the same cam as the 98-99's. Only the 01-02's have the LS6 intake, new cam, AND better manifolds. The 00's just have the better exhaust manifolds. I don't have any dyno numbers but I do have track times. I dropped 3 tenths and gained 3mph with nothing changed besides going from the stock manifolds and a cutout to LT's and ORY-pipe. I never got the car tuned, although I did get it ATAP'ed and it was only slightly rich. It's been talked about before though that the rich reading is only from the bad placement of the O2 sensors in most long tubes. When most cars are dyno'ed using a wide band they usually aren't actually running rich. People also associate the smell of the exhaust with no cats as running rich. It will smell more like gas once you delete the cats even if it's tuned.

The 2000 cars have a slightly more aggresive cam than the 98-99 cars, but that just means they can probably benefit more from the long tubes, however I'm running stock manifolds, and no cats, and putting up as good if not better numbers than a lot of guys with long tubes

2000 A4, I gained 12rwhp with FLPs with cats. Probably would have gained a few more, but I was running lean and getting 3-4 degrees of KR. Also would have gained more without the cats. I figured best case scenario, I would have gained 20rwhp. Stock engine.
