Default Carbon Residue...?

I've got this carbon residue on the underside of my hood... I've got an exhaust leak on the driverside... you guys think that's the culprit?

It's dark outside right now, but I'll take a pic tomorrow of my hood so you can get a good idea of what i'm talking about...

EDIT: Here's the pics...

I take it you mean the header gaskets? If so, I'm getting some LT's pretty soon, so that'll solve that problem if it is the problem...

I'm more or less just wondering if anyone has had a residue on the underside of their hood when having an exhaust leak...?

Bingo. That is what it is. I had that happen for a long time. Went deadsoft gaskets and the problem vanished.

Got a link to the dead soft? I'm also considering the PERCY's gaskets... Then of course everyone says that the stockers work fine as well...

Can an exhaust leak like this cause any damage to the engine if driving it like this for a little while?

EDIT: Took pics and added them to the first post

Just get a set of stock gaskets and you'll be fine. When you do the swap be sure to use anti-seize on all of the bolts and just re-torque them after the first couple of runs and you won't have any issues with leaks.

I'm getting the Stg. 8 header bolts so backing out shouldn't be an issue

I tried a set of the Percy's that are suppose to be "dead soft" for the collectors on my '70 and they've done nothing but leak. The flanges start warping when tightened down and the gaskets are leaking. I even went over all the flanges with a large file to ensure they'd be flat.

Really? Anyone else have any bad experiences with the Percy's?

I'm pretty sure you're comparing two different things. Collector gasket to a header gasket.
