not another 98 thread.....my 98 has 150k+ miles on it ive done most everything but heads and in my area at the track i race at its just as fast or faster than the newer ones.....

97-00 ls1 engines had weak rod bolts oil pumps werent great and the ls1 manifold.....all the heads were the same even the 806 heads the only difference was the 99 and later had center bolt valve covers.....i think the 241s on a handfull of late 00 cars and 01-02 cars were cast a lil smoother......some 01-02 cars had ls6 blocks but not all...01-02 have ls6 manifolds and no egr but a smaller cam than the older engines...
the 98 pcm gets tricky to tune on an sd blower setup.....

if you get the 98 and plan on racing it id do an ls6 oil pump atleast...the rod bolts are just peace of mind IMO......i turned mine to 6400 with the stockers several times with no issues....but i upgraded them when i done the cam......if the production date was earlier than march of 98 upgrade to the newer knock sensors and harness....mine had the old ones and was a lil slower than some othewr later built 98s stock.......

you cant go wrong with any ls1

i think black boxes were only on the 2002's because i think thats the only year GM put them in all of their cars. Also 98s are fine starting blocks and the only things you need to consider are...tricky VE tables to tune with, and with efilive the real time tuning program roadrunner is for 99+. the head castings are not the greatest, the knock sensors retard timing from 0-4*, and i guess biggest issue to me is the block cannot be bored becase the block lining is too thin. So dont drop a valve, or severely damage the cylinder walls, and you'll be good to go!

but when you replace rod bolts, dont you have to resize them or get them recut. I will prob get the LS6 oil pump and maybe replace the bearings too.

the only time ive really heard of peolple having real problems is when you mess with the wiring harnesss from other years,

if you were to switch from a A4 to an M6 on an LS1, a 98 cant handle the 99-02, and a 99-02 cant handle the 98. thats the only thing ive seen with them, just weird little oddities like that
