Default Strange Exhaust Rattling...

I have an 01 SS and for some strange reason the exhaust has a rattle at idle, I've had it on a lift and hit the exhaust with my hand and I can hear it but it doesn't seem to be coming from anywhere on the outside. I thought it was the o2 sensor crush collars so I put some high temp sealent on them but the rattle remains. I had a buddy of mine say the cat may be broken on the inside and I also recieved a recall letter from GM saying some cats are going bad, anyone else have this problem?

Broken ceramic in the cat can rattle, but usually it follows an impact of some sort. Have any other cat related problems (running warmer than usual, loss of power, exhaust smell different, engine revs slower)? You could always drop by a local dealer, as the cat fix is free with the 'not a recall' letter they sent out. If you've checked everything out externally and see nothing a cat would be my next suspect.

Yeah I went to the chevy dealership and tried to convince them to put in some high flow cats but they would only put in factory cats. Oh well I think I will just go ahead and get some nice ceramic coated headers with duals. Hopefully that will solve it, if not then I have some serious problems.

I have the EXACT same problem on my 02 Z28. Sounds like a metalic rattle or kinda like heavy change in your pocket rattling around? Its hard to describe to the idiots who work at my dealership too. My cars going in next week I'll ask them to look at the CATs thanks, u may have helped me out

I have a rattle on my exhaust too but I can't seem to find the problem. It's not cat related for me since I don't have cats.

I had the exact same problem. turned out to be the Ceramic inside the rear O2's was broken and rattling around. its easy to check. just take out the rear O2's and shake them. If they make a noise that is the problem.

I had the same problem as you, it was towards the front on the drivers side, all i did was tighten down every single bolt on all the heat shields on that side and the rattle went away, and made sure the driver side exhaust manifold bolts were tight
