Default Cali EGR question for smog

I still have EGR right now, but my tune was supposed to turn EGR off. I'd imagine that means that my EGR is not functioning and I can take all that EGR crap off. Here's my question: In Cali we have strict visual AND sniffer tests for smog. So if my EGR is totally off my car (no codes being thrown), will the smog guy know it's missing? Will he deny me because my EGR is not connected?

My guess would be that if there's no code being thrown, I'm fine. Anyone have any experience with this?

Default Cali and Smog

It just depends where you get the car smogged. I have heard stories of people passing smog without the EGR. I have heard stories of people passing with long tubes.

If you live in Cali and your car came with the EGR you need to have it on the car functioning to pass smog. They hook up the car to the computer and that tells them everything about the car. I was in a similar dilema when I installed my LS6 manifold on my '99 Formula. I told my tuner mechanic that I needed to keep my EGR for smog reasons. He basically drilled a hole where the EGR goes and I got the EGR kit from Lingenfelter. This kit holds the EGR fitting to the manifold.

I passed the visual. I passed smog. The price you pay for living in Cali.

Does the EGR make the exhaust gases cleaner for the sniffer?? I doubt it. If it doesnt, then as long as it's hooked up with no codes, then all should be fine right? Thing that pisses me off is that I told the Wait4mePerformance guy to NOT turn off any of my smog stuff, and he did it anyways...

That is exactly what the EGR is for. If your car is equipped with it then you need it for the smog test. But every shop is different. Some scrutinize everything, others will let things slide. If you have to go to a test only center then you will be screwed if you do not have the EGR.

well it's on the car, just turned off i guess. Soo should it pass the sniffer with the EGR turned off? What exactly does "turning off the EGR" in a tune do?

If you have the EGR on the car it must be functioning. When the tech hooks up your car to the smog machine it will check to see if the smog equipment is working. The EGR is part of the smog equipment on your car.

You can chance it if the shop lets stuff slide. If the shop crosses every T and dots every i your are in trouble.

so ive been talking to an emissions tech her in austin about this ****....and he says if the car comes equipped with air and egr that they will look for it, if they cant find it you will fail...

however, he says that these tech's dont know what year car has what, so what you do is remove all the stickers and diagrams in the engine bay displaying your air and egr systems...

Then the tech has no idea if your said year has to have air or egr, thus it slides. This is not picked up in the pcm check as then the codes have been tuned out. just passing on information...

from what ive seen, the techs arent all that smart. they are not LS1 pros (like most people on these boards) to know what goes where. if they see block off plates then they might start asking questions, but from what ive heard (from the inspection techs themselves) as long you have a factory (or carb approved) intake, and factory cats youll pass. the fine details take too long to verify anyways.

as far as the computer thing goes, as long as theres no service codes and you pass the sniffer youll be fine. what your tuner did was he turned off the service code for the EGR and maybe even the AIR. this allows you to remove the systems and not get a SVS light.

Gotcha, so as long as my EGR and AIR are still hooked up, they are working, even though he "turned them off." Sounds good to me. I'll just leave it all alone and not worry bout failing smog...
