Default Screened MAF Sensor

Have read that it is not recommended to run a maf sensor without a screen if the car is to be driven daily on the street.

I hear a lot of people saying that they have removed the screen and have not had any problems.

I am want to purchase a used maf sensor, and need to understand if a de-screen maf sensor is OK, or should I wait for one with the screen. Can I get some recommendations?

You will hear mixed reviews on here..I personally have ran them both ways and never ran into any problems...Many other factors involved as well...Mods,tune,etc.etc..

LMAO. please explain how the lack of a screen causes the #8 piston to let go...

maybe it was that extra .001 hp that he got from removing the screen... cmon.

ok that aside, its fine, as long as you dont mess with the bars/wires on the inside of the maf, if you do something to them in the process of removing the screen that's when you would run into a problem.

people who run n2o b4 the maf have to remove the screen anyways, and i don't think the delphi zo6 maf has a screen.

i have been driving my car for 2 - 3 years without a screen and no problems at all. just make sure the maf itself is sound and you wont have a problem either way.

It is NOT a restriction in airflow. The intent of the screen is to straighten the airflow over the sensor itself for accurate measurement. Most recommend against its removal.

Consider the fact that GM removed the screen on the Z06 MAF. Dont **** up the little wires.

100+cfm gain just with that alone.
from my observation on a stock engine the car goes noticably harder in cooler situations compared to before
but seems to run sluggier in hotter conditions then before!
maybe the sceen promotes some kinda cooling effect to the hotter air?
i'm inclined to run it descreened only in winter and use the screen in summer

Ahhhhhhh NO, no cooling effect. Metal housing metal screen metal transfers heat very well. The z06 is all plastic.

Yep, as long as you descreen without messing up the wires, you'll be fine. I suggest (if you're worried about it) taking apart the maf, and setting the electronics aside. That way (if your prying with a screwdriver and it slips) you wont damage anything.
Now with all that said, you will probably gain .5hp lol. But its free, so give it a shot!

I descreened mine when I hooked up my nitrous and haven't ran into any problems. Car runs exactly the same.

Just an FYI to all.

the 85mm Delphi MAF used on the CTS-V (at least the '04/'05, that used the LS6) was definately screened. Didn't the early Z06's have a screen too?

I think the screen is there in the CTS-V, because it has the 90' bend going into the TB (like the GTO).

My $0.02

I always thought the purpose of the screen was for preventing debris from getting past the MAF and into the engine? ...leaving, twigs and such.

I have ran my SS descreened for many years....no issues. Like everyone else said, be careful if you take it off not to damage the wires.

It may be good for 1hp or so. It's free, so why not.

If you're going to get it ported it's gonna get descreened anyhow.

I've been running with mine descreened and ported without any problems but then again I got my car tuned including MAF tables modified via EFI Live tune/wideband.

I agree, if you do it have your MAF tables modified. I was curious how much of a restriction the screen was so I collapsed the screen on itself without folding it. I ended up with a piece of roughly 10 square centimeters.
