Cranking then smoke?

Cranking then smoke? I just put int he new motor, and before I put oil or any fluids in, I decided to get the key a turn just to get a quick crank, to see if it will. I hit it, and it made the sound, so I stopped, got my fluids, and filled her up.
After I fill her up I start cranking her and she si cranking but slow, battery was dead. I notice a little smoke from the hood...and it was coming from a small ground on the passanger side strut tower that I just attached. I am guessing there was just water between the metal, because it stopped.
After getting jumped cables and trying to crank her....she started making a like..thud cranking sound....and my buddy said it sounded like the starter was "boiling like water" and it smelt a bit like burnt wire near the nose of the car.....
Any help is appreciated.
