Default Dual exhaust, no x-pipe??

Is an x-pipe a must when making a dual exhaust system? I'm about to put on my bullet muffler, but I was thinking about just getting another one, cutting the cats and bolting them on after the ORP's. No y-pipe or anything, just two short pipes coming off the manifolds then two bullets with turndowns. Would not having an x hurt that much, or would the seperate duals be a good system? TIA

I don't think it will hurt anything. It may resonate to all hell.

You can go with no crossing pipes... you can also use an H-pipe... but an X-pipe is pretty much regarded as the best way to do it.

Aren't the gains higher with an X-pipe?

I don't have any problems with ground clearance i have the pipes coming out of the sides with 3" tips and still have 4" of clearance with stock suspension

I would run dual with an X pipe, you should pick up a few hp over the y pipe. I forget is the TA's have 2" or 2 1/2" exhaust? I know us guys with vetts like the sound of the X pipe over the H, and the x pipe picks up a few more hp.

How big are the mufflers? I would be using Dynomax bullets and I am concerned that if I put them parellel to the ground after the cats they will scrape the ground (ex pulling into a driveway...) Has anyone done this?? BTW ZEROFactix, I'd love to see some pics of the side exhaust if you have any.

I have 2.75" pipe. In this case, I'd be looking at an H or nothing. I guess H would be better in that case.

The X Pipe is the best way to go by far. Second is the H Pipe. Then true duals with no x or h pipe.

If I remember correctly, the purpose of the x pipe is for better exhaust scavenging over an h pipe and the difference in sound and ground clearance are only secondary reasons... if I'm wrong, don't hesitate to correct me.

I have the true duals - no X or H pipe. All 3". 8" long pipe from header to a billet muffler to a turn down. Haven't scraped yet. But I also don't run it around town any more. The cops would love that.

I did ask a couple of people - to include Paul from Thunder Racing - they argree that I would gain only 3-5 rwhp by adding an X pipe.

I tried the X pipe but was a PIA with the drive-shaft loop.

Thanks, David. That's exactly what I wanted to know.
I was also kind of thinking of running pipes out to the sides of the car, then making a kind of Bullet sidepipe with a turndown after it, all on the side of the car. Might do that, but I'm glad to know that original idea would probably work.
Thanks again, bro

Thats an interesting idea Nighthawk, I never considered not using a X pipe at all. It would be a lot less trouble and less expensive too. Do you still plan on doing this on stock manifolds? If you do I would definitely be interested in seeing some pics. I am looking for ideas because Im in the market for Duals too.
