Question Fact or Fiction?

I have been told that the F bodies between 2000 to 2002 are rated at only 315 to 330 horsepower only due to insurance reasons. But that is the true horsepower but at the rear wheels. So it would really be 360 or 380 at the engine. Any one else heard this? Any one have any factual info?? Thanks in advance

no, all LS1's theoretically have 350 flywheel hp.

I think I am going to get the stainless steel hookers. I can get them through on of the sponsors for around $515. Great price. and i was going to go with the Bassani tru-dual setup after the cats. Still not sure if i am going to get rid of the cats or not. There is no emissions here anymore, but i have read about guys complain about the gassy fumes from the car when not having cats though.

Get rid of the cats is my vote, if it set thier at an idle then you can smell it other than that but I kinda like the smell haha. Its good for 5 more hp in theroy anyway.
Like said above the more distance you can put between your car in the ground the better, I wouldent do it with out a lift.

Back to your original question, all LS1's are basically the same engine, but not all make the 350 HP like the C5 Corvettes. The Camaros and Trans Ams make different HP numbers than the Corvettes and GTO's running LS1's due to the different model camshafts they are running. The slightly less aggressive cam in the Trans Ams and Camaros gives it a slightly lower HP number. I'd bet that's the only difference in the LS1 engine models, but there may be some minor others. The cam each LS1 model runs is the main reason for the differences though.

Also, a stock Trans Am is listed at 305 HP vs. a stock WS6 listed at 320 HP due to the ram air functionality of the WS6 over a non-WS6 Trans Am.

Every LS1 is going to react differently. My buddy's SS bone stock 320/315. With a lid and headers, with the stock SS exhaust it made 360/350.....So they are power plants....

Amen to that. Every car will act differently. I saw a car on a dyno once with only an aftermarket air lid and it made something like 360-370 rwhp (unheard of on a stock car!) The 305/320/350 numbers above are only averages. There are always exceptions to every rule - we live in a real world, not one drawn out on paper.

there is actaully an article on here somewhere where they dyno'd a C5 vette and a Trans Am and the T/A actually ended up putting more power to the wheels, so anyone who tells you that the vette ls1 is better is wrong, they are the same. As for getting 360-370 stock, i would have to see that to believe it.

Its a well known fact... GM underrated the F-bodies. Heck my Z28 is rated at 305 flywheel hp but I put down 296 hp at the wheels when it was totally stock. so its quite underrated.

The underated it to keep vettes special and at the top of the line. From all I have read they are the exact same engine to keep manufacturing costs down.

Wasn't stock (only had an air box lid though - which I had sold him). No one believed it, even those of us that saw it.

I'll bet you a dollar that they aren't the EXACT same engines. Look up the part numbers for the C5 and F-body camshafts for each year. Then, look up the specs on each cam...they're different. It's the only thing that is different (like you said, to keep costs down in manufacturing), but the F-body cams were less aggressive to try and make them slightly less powerful than the C5's. I'm not saying that C5's make more power, just that that's how GM planned it. Like it was said above, they are powerplants. You don't know what you're going to get from them until you put it on the dyno and run it. And the F-bodies came off making very similar power to the C5's, so the R&D on making a different camshaft for F-bodies and C5's was pointless.

the cams from 98-99 were different from 01-02 cams but the 01 and 02 motors got the ls6 intake to make up for a smaller cam

All ls1s are ABOUT 345hp regardless of year. the corvette cam is the exact same

00-02's also got the rediculous EGR system that 98-99's missed out on (just remembered that). I may be wrong about the cams, but that's why I only bet a dollar on it above. I was pretty sure I saw somewhere that they were different, if I find it I'll let you know. Again, I'm not positive.
