Its needs to be tuned into your pcm to turn on earlier, or you can do what I did and run a wire from the fan relay to the fog light relay which i dont use. So when I want the fans on I just hit the fog light switch. It never realy gets hot anyway with the 160 stat.

The fans are controlled by the PCM, the PCM It reads the ECT sensor which will trigger the Fan Relay at the prorammed setting. The key word here is sensor vs. switch.
You don't want to reprogram the PCM for the fan setting, then you don't have much choice if unless you wire in a manual switch to activate the Fan Relay or use a extra temp switch in the passenger side head to trigger the relay.

No, you turn it on yourself and you can either turn on the high speed fans or the low speed fans

i also have the SLP unit.....most of the sponsors probably have it --->
in the "off" position the fans work according to the computer settings. the "on" settings are either high speed or low speed, and are running untill you put the switch in "off"
i've run it on my old LT1 and now my LS1...works great. but don't forget to switch it OFF....it'll stay on with the ignition turned off. and drain your battery.
i found that if the engine gets hot, the low setting will barely pull the temps down if you're still sitting still in hot weather.
but if you turn on the high fan setting...it will pull the temps right down to whatever your thermostat will equalize at, which is about 170-175 for me with my 160 stat.
