Now What? Jet-Hot LT Header Install From Hell!
I NEVER did solve the problems, and I really do think the problems might have had something to do with why I just replaced my engine due to an internal knock. The car never did run right after the LT headers. I eventually did everything that was recommended over here and at ls1.com. I tried everything from a MAFT, to grinding down the O2 bungs, to replacing the O2's, to re-grounding the O2's just in case I had a burned wire, blocked off AIR, bought 3" wide bandclamps to seal everything up, and several other things that I just can't remember. The final straw was when I was getting on the interstate and I decided to nail it even though I knew I was having problems and at the next exit ramp, I heard the engine knocking (I think I had the MAFT set too lean, but I wouldn't have had the MAFT if it hadn't been for the LT header problems)...it was too late, but I yanked the LT headers off and sold them. I just completed the LS6 longblock swap this past Thurs. and I switched over to Hooker shorty headers. I sold the Jet-Hots last March and the guy that bought them hasn't had any problems which leads me to believe some computers just don't like LT's.
The ONLY thing left that I can recommend that I didn't try is to replace the header gaskets. I reused my stock gaskets and checked to make sure the bolts were tight on several occassions, but now that my LS1 is sitting in the crate that my LS6 came in, it's very obvious I had an exhaust leak on cylinders 6 & 8...there's a lot of black soot below the where the gasket was supposed to seal. I talked to an LT1 guy that said the only way to fix his leak was to actually use TWO gaskets on each side. That's my only suggestion.
I couldn't have been happier the day I sold my LT's and the guy came and got them. That was by far the worst mod I ever did and the only way to solve my problem was to get rid of them. I know several others have had NO problem, but I wasn't one of them
How is your new engine doing?
Kooks makes a fine header...just for the record.
