Default quick easy question

I tried a quick search, but at work, can't spend too much time... I am wanting to run over to Summit and pick up an SLP off Road Y-pipe... that supposedly fits oem manifolds... my goal is to eliminate that flat stock pipe and gain a bit of power and hopefully make the car louder....

the question...
by removing the cats, what happens? will the computer do something to compensate for its lack of cats and mess up something?
or will it be ok?

i was under the impression t he SLP Ypipe only replaces the pipes BEHIND the cats...
unless this is a differnt ORP than i've seen.

but honestly...other than noise...you'll gain almost nothing. its the manifolds taht hold you back.

the "flat spot" is actually designed for comparable cross section area as the 2.5" round pipe. so the gain is minimal.

save your money for headers.

oh...and the SES will go off without the cats...due to the down stream o2 sensors. but the code has nothing to do with the function of the engine. simulators or a tune will take care of the light

ok, I will look at this.... will I get a big gain from headers???? just by looking at where the engine is in the car, headers would be a b&#%&#Gtch to install????

hmmm.... well my car is a daily driver, no racing, 'cept for killing imports.... but I want as much of a mileage/power gain as possible while accomplishing a great sound, I am considering building a custom catback, i.e. 3" pipe with a 2-chamber super 40 flowmaster (since they can come with a dual out) - but I fear with a 2-chamber and all the cats, that it'd still be quiet... - would I get a big power/mileage gain from headers, an off road y, and the custom catback?

headers are a MUST for any power application.

going from bone stock exhaust....to LT headers, off road pipe, and a good 3" catback exhaust...figure a solid 20-25hp.

and the flowmaster is NOT the best choice in mufflers. they are on the restrictive side. some guys pick up 10hp+ with a cutout over the flowmaster. there are better choices.

on a budget i'd suggest the magnaflow catback. very free flowing, nice tips, stainless muffler, and inexpensive.

headers are not mechanically difficult to install...they are logistically difficult. you have to either use a lift...or get the nose of the car WAY up in the air.
i used jack stands on top of cinder blocks for mine. but i also did the header install, by myself...having NEVER installed headers before...in my driveway in 10hrs.

check out page 11 of my website in the sig...very detailed step by step write up i did.

Headers really wake up the car man. I was very impressed after my header swap. They are not that bad to install if you have some people with you who have done it before. Even by yourself you should have no problems.

Headers are the key. It will sound like a totally different car. The 3" Y pipe will still be a little flat in that same spot but it will definately open up the flow. If you cut the cats, you gotta get o2 sims or delete their existence from the PCM with HP Tuners. You also gonna be bottle necked if you dont replace the exhaust pipe going over the axle. Make sure your exhaust has a 3 " inlet as well.

I have 3 " headers, y-pipe, and exhaust pipe going into the 3" super 40. Sounds great. My exhausts turns down right out of the muffler and it gives it a really deep effect. I get comments a lot.

thank you for the info, I definitely appreciate any help... I have heard Magnaflow cars before a few and while I understand they may flow good, I just don't like the way they sound... the tone isn't my style... I'm willing to sacrifice a few HP for the Flowmaster® "tone" - cause the Flowmaster® should still outflow the stock setup by a lot.

The guys at the Summit store all push Magnaflow a lot... and even on trucks, yukons, etc. • I just don't like it... (this is purely my "opinion" of course doesnt make it bad, just not my style)

I just put a muffler on my wife's Yukon, and the guys at Summit really pushed toward a Magnaflow, and I decided to go with the Super 40 and we both LOVE the way the Flowmaster® sounds!!!
