well i know on the lt1 cars with the factory y has a flat spot in it that cause the popping. so i guess its the same with the ls1's.

It's a combination of the lack of backpressure from not having a muffler and the flatter y-pipe on the driver side for clearance. My LT1 popped less after I got headers and a nice y-pipe.

Popping and gurgling when revving down is more or less normal.

Nothing to worry about except the sound. Sometimes the tips you are running can cause the popping sound to increase or decrease. With my old 95 TA i changed from the 2 split style tips on each side to a single opening tip on each side and it helped to reduce the popping.

It is the firing order unfortunately and the resonance of the AL block that magnifies that sound.

having an open exhaust with a resonator style muffler, i.e: loudmouth, will also amplify the already existing effects.

my dad has stock manifolds and y, loudmouth with CME and it pops like crazy when cold. when it warms up its not as bad but it's damn annoying. when my buddy got headers and an ory, the noise went away on his car. i picked up an slp y pipe for my dads car so hopefully it helps
