Just curious about putting muffler on header

Default Just curious about putting muffler on header

So I was looking through a few exhaust setups and I saw one where the guy just had Flowmaster chamber 1's bolted directly onto the collector of each header and that was the extent of his exhaust...

What would be the benefits of running it this way?

What would be the negative aspects of this setup?

It would be loud as hell in the cabin since it will be right under you. I did that once with my monte carlo, and you could hardly hold a conversation with the person sitting next to you. Other than that it shouldnt hurt anything. And i suppose the benefit would be losing some weight from not having a catback attached to the car.

you wont get the scavenging effect as much if theres no y/x/h pipe. more torque but less top end I am pretty sure.

I ran a moroso spiral flow on each header then about 18 inches of straight pipe and turndowns pointed to the side of the car for clearance. It sounded so good. It was very very tourqey. Your ears would ring on a long trip and there was ALOT of gas fumes. I ran it like that for about 2 weeks untill I took it to the exhaust shop to get the x pipe put on. I would honestly say that the car made more power with the x pipe but only a couple hp. If you like that kinda sound then you might consider an H pipe for duals. It is safe to run that way as long as you have a bit of pipe so it can make a little back pressure.

when i bought my car i drove about 1,000 miles from cali to Oregon with open headers the y-pipe has electric cutouts on it which rubbed so it wasnt on their when i bought it we had trouble hearing for the next week

car craft had an article a couple years ago and they made the most power with the muffler 18 inches from the header. im going to put an h-pipe in that 18'' area and see how it works.

I run that setup on my car. I just put 2 straight sections of pipe on each collector and then clamped a flowmaster 1 chamber on there with turndowns aiming down and out. Its loud as hell with the windows down, Wicked in tunnels and stuff but its no worse than when I had an X pipe dumped at the axle. It actually resonates less imo. As far as the hp gain or loss I don't know but I didn't notice a difference. I'd rather shed 30 lbs and loose a couple hp because it would be more of gain than having a heavier car with 2-3 more hp.

i have 5 in long bullet mufflers about 12 in off of each colector a nd turn downs rite before the front cross member of my madman torque arm
