remember if you do get one to have your fans set to turn on earlier that or and have a manual fan switch .
How exactly do you set the fans to turn on earlier?

With a tune, handheld tuner or with a manual switch. The switch would be the cheapest at $60 for a caspers or $72 or a slp.

Your computer goes to closed loop at 122* coolant temp. If your car didnt go into closed loop in a set amount of time it will throw a code. The 160* t-stat will cause the engine to use more fuel because the cylinder walls will be cooler making the combustion chamber less thermally efficient to completely burn the air fuel mixture. If the cylinder walls are too cold fuel may actually condense on the cylinder walls and fall out of atomization. This is why your engine runs rich during warm up. The ECM was designed to compensate for a wide range of enviroments so lowering coolant temps 20* will have little effect on drivability and performance... but there is an effect. I wouldnt recomend a lower t-stat for a bolt on car

I run a 180* thermostat. Its kind of the best of both worlds. The car can reach operating temps and get good gas milage because the oiling system is properly lubricating things. The temp is lower than the stock so it helps prevent det. 160* thermostats dont allow your car to heat up enough to produce any heat on colder nights either. Just my .02

true, but the way you drive/how/where you drive could certainly make ya need/want a t stat, i know i want one because 195-200 is too hot imo, maybe im just too used to old school muscle but thats just how i look at it, max 185*

Coolant is designed to run @ temp high enough to boil the water out of the oil.

Coolant temp has nothing to do with intake air temp, which will produce more hp.

160* T-stat = not a great Idea, even though I have one.

This has been beat to death on the boards, do a search.

This has been beat to death on chevytalk.com Search over there and there is a study that shows it increases engine wear. The General set up our cars to operate at 195 for a good reason.

190 or 195 is stock. 180 is a mid range and 160 is a cold. Like stated before, worst gas mileage and the motor doesnt heat up to proper operating temps and the oil doesnt lube the way it should leading to more wear and worst gas. If it did give you a few extra HP, you can do a throttle body bypass which would be doing basically the same concept but still keep the reliablity. Not a good idea in my opinion. Just my .02

160 stat does not mean your ENGINE automatically runs at 160 degrees. I have 160 stat and have set my fans to come on sooner than stock settings. In stop and go traffic my engine temp runs around 195-200 and in highway runs the engine temp is at 185ish.

As far as fuel mileage, well I didn't notice any bad fuel mileage.

After I put my 160 tstat in and used my hypertech to program the fan to come on earlier I plugged in my Autotap after it was warmed up and idling. It was at 173 degrees idling in my garage after it had already been running for 20min. Was a good chance to flush the coolant system at the same time I swapped out the stat. It was something cheap for my car that I asked for on my bday.

Oh yea the gauge was showing just a little below 210 on the gauge on the dash when it said 173.

+1 here- I have run 160 t'stats on my LT1 equipped Caprice, that was running great at 'only' 250,000 miles when I sold it to buy my LS1 Z28. The guy that did my dyno tuning included a 160 degree t'stat- Doesn't mean that the car only runs 160, more like 200 +/- More on hot days especially when idling- The Caprice needed it in the summer, when I sat idling it would got so hot the AC would shut off. I notice the difference in the heat in the winter, but not drastic- Didn't even notice it with the Z, but I don't drive it much in the winter weather....

If cooler running is so bad, why does everybody do the throttle body bypass? That has been shown to be worth 5 or 6 HP- cooler intake air. With lower temps you have less chance of detonation, and the PCM will advance your timing more aggressively- more power-
