Default 160 stat

Why do I always see that people have 160 stats for thier cars. Does this just prevent the car from overheating and what not? Or is there something specific that it benefits?

well it doesnt really benifit anything. it just causes the car to use more gas.

the cooling system on these cars works very well. you can hotlap and dyno these cars many times over and it's just hard to get them to overheat even with the stock tstat.

why would you say it causes you to use more gas? and i was told it keeps the motor from getting heat soaked and losing power, and also keeps the engine running cooler for longer trips. i was always worried seein the gauge right below 210 lol. guess im just used to older hot rods ;D

It helps a lot, especially when it is hot out and traffic. Make sure to get your fans tuned to come on sooner as well. A cooler engine makes more power, come on, we all know this. Coolant temps can go 200+* on a hot day with the stock tstat, the 160 will keep the engine running around 175-185 depending on the outside temp.

I'm about to install a FTRA in my car, which will obviously block part of the radiator. Should I install a 160 t-stat in my car? We get some pretty hot summers around here (Chicago area).

The thermostat is hardly ever the problem so don't
go expecting it to solve anything. Radiator core and
airflow (fans, obstruction and crud) are your limitations.
The thermostat gets done because it's cheap, not
because it's effective on a low-mods setup.

jimmy blue knows his stuff, i'll just add there have been lots of discusions that the stat alone without the computer turning the fans on sooner is of little to no value. just food for thought.

In a few weeks i am going to get my car dyno'ed and the person who is going to do it would like to see a 160* stat in it.
So i am guessing there is some type of reason he wants it in there, and they must do something because many people have them on this board.

lower stat, means cooler running engine. in theory a cooler engine will have less issues with detonation.

granted some of that is holdover from older engine styles.

but i think having the chance to get the coolant temps a 20* lower is a good thing.
other option instead of tuning for the fans is a fan switch...

what bad things have you heard? i would like to know if there is any negatives to the tstat but i dont see how a cooler running car would be bad.

Definitely, also change your coolant because that can also help lower temps as well. A friend noticed his engine wasn't as cool as it used to be and he flushed his coolant system put new coolant in and it helped a lot.

I think that some engines just run better hotter than cooler. I think mine is one of those because my car has run it's best times around 200* coolant temperature indicated from a Autometer gauge. I have a 160* and will probably go have my tuner up the fan speeds so that it burns a little cleaner. I guess some engines just like running a little warmer.

I have to call on the t-stat causing you to burn more fuel.
I have a 160 t-stat. I can't really say if it lowered my engine temps, due to the dummy temp gauge, but there was no negative effects.

i think they mean burn more gas because with a factory set computer it believes the motor is not fully up to correct operating tempature and it runs in closed-loop or open-loop (whichever its called) fuel delivery mode which is its way of trying to warm the motor up more quickly thus burning more gas on start-up and during intial run time. i have heard that the computer advances timing and alters fuel delivery during below normal motor temps in an effort to speed the warming process. until the set temp.(whatever that might be) is reached it will continue to run this default program.

i just added a 160 stat on my car and can say that at operating temp my guage actually runs a tad bit lower on the guage . of course the gauges are not exact but was surprised to see that .
remember if you do get one to have your fans set to turn on earlier that or and have a manual fan switch .

if i remember corectly, the temp cutoff for openloop/closedloop is about 130*

so exactly how would a tstat that doesn't open to coolant flow till 160* have any affect on the "warm up" of an engine....compared to a stat that opens at 195?
