Whats in YOUR can?
Catchcan that is.........Question what is a "usual/acceptable" amount to see in a catchcan on a LS1 NA motor? I have 50K ,basic mods etc. I made a home depot catchcan and have started to see some oil on the bottom. A buddy has the same setup and his is half full with about 500 miles on his 2002 w/75K. Could he of put too much oil in the motor?

its not from putting too much oil in. although it could be if you filled it to the brim lol. every engine varies to the next. it also depends on years from what i understand. plumbing wise of the pcv system. ive heard people constantly draining and some that hardly. as long as its not going into the intake it should be ok

I did a home depot catch can as well, but with 2 small husky seperators. Whatever the first one doesn't catch, the second hopefully should get it. Got the idea from a guy in a vette i believe that started a thread on here. I think it varies between cars as well, and i think also on how many times you go WOT in your car. I think if your always hauling ***, and taking your car to 6K (or higher if cammed) you got a larger chance of oil getting sucked up by the pcv.

i did away with my pcv pretty much . run a hose to the back valve covers almost like stock . then put a rubber nipple over the front of the passenger side valve cover a nipple on the intake manifold , a nipple or plug on the tb and a breather where the oil cap is and it is good to go . keeps all the unmetered air as well as hot gasses from being recycled back into the intake .

How are you flushing out the other gasses that re-comdense back into the engine after cool down? All it appears you can accomplish w/your setup is to relieve excess crankcase pressure at high RPM's, but w/out pulling metered vac at idle or low rpms the water vapor, unburn't fuel, caustic combustion gasses, etc. all stay in the motor. If it was a track only application then pull vac w/a belt driven vac pump with a vac relief valve in the opposite valve cover that the vac pump would pull from & then dump it into a vented overflow can (so none is spilt on the track) and you would be OK there, but you will shorten your motor life quite a bit with the setup you describe over time on the street. Also, where does the hose run to from the back of the valve cover? If unfiltered it is a direct path for dirt & moisture into the crankcase. A PCV system set-up properly with a functional catch can will eliminate all but the worst blow-by oil contamination.
