What is the differance in altinater years?

I bought a 04 ls6 long block and it didn't come with the alt. I see 98-02 alts all over but nothing after 02. What is the difference? Can I get an 02 and modify it? I've read something about 5 volts vs 12 volts. Any help is appreciated. That's all that's left to start the darn thing.

All years should be the same as far as I know. Just out of curiosity, where are you looking? The LS6 didn't even exist till 2001 and was used in the C5 Z06 through 04. If it is an f-body site that would explain it because LS1 f-bodies ran from 98-02. I'm guessing the alternator for the 2 engines is the same since an LS6 is just an LS1 with a mild heads/cam/intake package.

First I checked a local napa and they were very expensive and had to order it from gm. Then I looked on ebay and they too are all 98-02. One of the ebay members told me they were different but wanted another input. I'd think they would all be the same but wasn't sure about brackets or harness plug.
