Default Airbox lid

I have an MTI lid that I'm painting body color, however after looking closely at it, I was wondering what the difference would be if I just removed the ribs from the factory lid? I removed them and sanded the inside smooth. I checked the area of the eliptical as compared to the round area of the MTI lid. The eliptical factory is larger as I suspected to make up the flow loss.

Has anyone tried this before and what were the results?

The eliptical area of the factory lid equals 10.45 inches sq. and the MTI round bellows inlet equals 9.45 inches sq. With the ribs removed the airflow should be fairly equal or at least that is what the numbers work out.

Hmm, I guess I would need pictures to understand exactly what you are talking about. BTW, where abouts in MI are you?

The MTI lid's volume (area) is much larger allowing more air to enter. The ribs in the factory cover are there along with the stupid little "bubbles" in front of MAF are there to quite down the air intake noise. Just put the MTI lid on aftermarket lids are dyno proven, factory airlid is minimal.

Rescue Ranger, I am in Auburn Hills, MI. mikenews, I agree that the ribs are there to decrease the intake noise, however, more importantly, they are there to decrease the "oil can" NVH noise. I somewhat disagree that the MTI has a larger volume area, at least when measured for volume. I do agree that the MTI lid is dyno proven. The question still remains if anyone has dyno'd a lid with the ribs removed and the based wet sanded smooth for flow. Some airflow Engineers seem to think that now they will be fairly equal. I'll be on a dyno soon and post the results.
