Default Serious Serious Problem!!!! Please come in

http://images.cardomain.com/member_i.../254692_44.jpg

I was trying to get the passenger header off, I was wiggling it around trying to get it off (by myself, my friend wasn't there) and as I was wiggling it all of a sudden I saw a few sparks come, scares the $hit out of me

I quickly looked to the top of the car and as you can see in the picture, the rusted thing (passenger side header) looks to have slightly cut that red wire next to it (the red wire also has a black thing on one end and foil wrapped on the other end.....Also note I forgot to disconnect the battery, I know stupid me

Anyhow I feel like throwing up right about now what the hell did I do, after these headers, any serious mechanic work is going to a pro.

Oh Jesus I really hope it was nothing serious and I can just replace the wire or put electrical tape on it

Anyhow I did manage to get the stupid passenger header off

Can you get a bigger picture? I don't even know what we are looking at. Maybe replace that wire if you can. Ill take a look at my car in the morning to see what that wire is.

Looks like the positive wire going to the starter. I'd say you are probably fine. Maybe you just hit the exposed part of the wire that connects to the starter. That wire should be fairly thick. If you only scratched the surface of the wire, I'd just tape it up. If it is REALLY cut deep, it has to be replaced, but it should not be too difficult. Don't get discouraged, nothing goes smoothly.

BTW, Disconnect the damn battery now!

Yep, I agree with Tom. d/c the batt, down a cold glass of water, cuz yoru dehydrating sweating your tail off from the whole sparky incident, and tape the wire up. It aint that serious if it was there would be much more to show.

Good-luck, and dont get discouraged working on your own car, even with the little "incidents" will give you more satisfaction than you would if you paid out the keister for a shop to do it, and they might forget the battery too.

Here is some better pics of the wire and where it goes to

http://images.cardomain.com/member_i...92_45_full.jpg

Thank you all so friggin much, I can't tell you how much better I feel....

Wow that was close, I got so scared....BTW I do think I scraped the wire, don't think I cut it, and the battery is disconnected....

BTW Cat3, you nailed it on the head, I was sweating like a dirty monkey out there all day, even when the sun went down, and I downed a good amount of water.....

Thats fine. Tis but a minor flesh wound!

Seriously, that looks fine. Put some tape on it and it will live.

I have had that happen a couple times to me. On my old Z28. I welded a snap on 3/8 drive ratch to the starter and the frame! Just make sure to disconnect the battery everytime you work on the car.

Thank you all very much!!!!

I baby my car so much and nearly $hit my pants when I saw the sparks....It reminded me back in the day when I was about 7 or 8 watching my dad work on the Bonneville, all of a sudden flames appeared and that was the end of the Bonneville....Funny thing is he was telling me that story about an hour before my little incident, he told me he was messing around with the fuel lines and fuel filter and something obviously went wrong...

So what does everyone think I should get? Shrink wrap the wire, electrical tape, replace the wire, high temp insulation wrap.

I just went looking at www.homedepot.com and www.lowes.com and don't see anything I could use.

Thanks again everyone for your help, sorry admins for double posting in external and internal.

1) Shrink wrap-preferred but hard to find in right size, warm with low temp dryer.

2) hi-temp insulating tape/wrap...again may be hard to find, and or work with.

3) black electrical tape...depends, maybe a little too close to headers and might split open after wrapping and driving.

4) replace wire, least preferred for such a little scrape.

Uhh 2002 T/A. No biggy easy to fix. Go to a j-yard and get one fo 2 bucks. Another thing don't be discouraged to do the jobs yourself but read the install instruction first, <ALWAYS READ FIRST>. Another BOOBOO you didn't remove the plugs Always remove the plugs on a header install or removal.
We all learn from our mistakes, Lord knows i've done sooo many.

Yep all is good. To mend the wire, I would wrap it well in electrical tape and then get some muffler repair tape and wrap it up. Should be able to find it at just about any parts store.

And get right back in there for the next mod. It's the best way to learn. Heck I never disconnected my battery and I'm experienced, same thing could have happened to me or anyone.
